Page1 eJim Souch is Whitby's outstanding..& citizen for'93 By Mark Reesoraar winner, which recognizes Whitby's outstanding citizen of the year, is very active in the community even though he lives in Oshawa. Jim Souch says he'd correct that little indiscretion except tht it would be very difficuit te move the family's house, which haPcens te be located acrosh The owner of Marigold Lincoln Mercury, Souch is well known in the community, both for his busi- ness dealings and his community service work. He's se well known, i fact, that Whitby Chanîber of Com- merce president Lynn Woods admitted ini his presentation speech people would very quickly recognize who the recipient.was (the name of the winner is a closely guarded secret; even Souch, who was on the commit- tee which planned the evening, didn't suspect a thing). Souch bas served the com- munity "ini numerous ways,7 says Woods. He's p ast president of numerous clubs, including the Ski Club, FlI ng Club and Kiwanis, and Mhaschaired the % Kiwanis Musical Festival and JIM SOUCH been active with the Sick Kids Hospital. He's long been involved with the Diabetes Association and is the founding chair of the Dr. Charles H. Best Centre for Dia- betic Children Association. The United Way has aIse bene- fited from Souch's bard work. He was chair of the 1992 campaign and is now on the board of directers. He's been a member of the board of the Whitby General Hospital since 1989 and is cur- rently first vice chair of the board. He's also been very active with the Whitby Chamber of Com- merce,, serving as president in 1986 and maintaining an active P resence on mnany committees. He was named the chaniber's business person of the year in 1990. He's also been active in career days at local higb schools and worked with the Durham Board of Education througb its busi- ness advisory programs. Souch's dealership employed 18 peuple when he first opened it. Today 50 people, inclucling three sons and one daughter, work there. He's been active ini the Toronto Automotive Dealers' Association and was president of the Ontario Automotîve Association in the early eighties. He even found time te run for political office in the late 1970s, but was unsuccessful in unseat- inu Ed Broadbent...
