WWhty Free Presa, Wednesday, December 8, 1993 Rat Pck gaisslit in close contests On the heels of their victory at the Stoney Creek Tournanent of Champions, the Whitby major novice AA hockey club faced two tough challenges in the past week, recording a win and a ls in regular season action. On Wednesday, the pewerful Markham Thunder was the o pposition. Rat Pack had corne cose to Markharn earlier in the season but had net yet earned a victory againat this tough team. The game was both fast and physicai, with neither teain able to score in the first period. Early in the second, Justin Hawe was sent in by Kevin Walsh and Rat Pack, went into the lead. Whitby forwards Jason lx...s....... A Port Perry rink won the Attersley Tire womnen's bonspiel at the Whitby Curling Club on Dec. 1. SkpwsHoppy Carnwith vicekaMaore Jackson, second Gail Bal lard and lead Sandy Greenwood. Runner-upi was an Oshawa rink under sicip Peg Clerninson. Second- prize went to a Dixie Curling Club rink (runner-up Unionville rink) and third prize to an Avonlea rink (runner-up Lindsayrink). Connor, Michael FInigan and Brandon Fowler led the attack on the Markham goal during the second, but Whitby was unable te, widen the bead. Midway through the third, defenceman Jan-ie Millage took a pass from Sean Pitcher and saw some roin. He stepped around and between three Markhain defenders, put a beautiful move' on the Markham goatender and depoited the puck into the corner of the net. Whitby wes now ahead by two and it was tino for the defence te take over. Markharn mounted a strong attack in the final 10 minutes of the gaine, but was continually stoppe by the strong play of Rat Pack, led by Andrew Martland and Rbin Côté who wes filling in on defence due te, the injury of James Simpson. Markham scored midway through the third on a scremble in front of the net to pull within a goal, but Whitby quieted down Markham in the remaining seven minutes te, skate te a wel-deserved 2-1 victery. Gaine stars for Whitby were Kybe Nova who stepped 13 or 14 difficubt shots, Andrew Lamiot and Jamie Millage. On Saturday, Ajax paid a visit te Iroquois Park te give the Pack another teugh test. Ajax han always played well against Whitby and this gaine wasnon exception. Although being outshot bby Rat Pack, Ajax inanaged te slp two pucks past Drew Dockrill and the firat period ended 2-0. Whitby came on streng in the second with Hawe capping off a nice three-way passing play froin Robert Eberle and Sean Pitcher te make the score 2-1. Moments later Ajax widened the leed te twe, with another goal on a seramnble. WVhitby, down 3-1, domineted the third period with many great scoring oppertunities only te be thwarted by greet goaltending and two posta. Wade Branch brought the Pack within one, with assista from Sean Kerr and Jeremi Brimble, but Whitby could net get the equalizer and went down te defeat 3-2. Rat Pack continues leegue play this weekend with home gaines ageinst Richmond i-lb on Saturday and Newmarket on Sunday. Both gaines wibl be et Iroquois Park. Mfichael Leahy and Joshua Mfiler posted the shutout. Mett Snowden earned a hat trick, oe goal unassisted and twe on set-ups from Nfichael McKenzie, Kevin Rempel and Tyler Heely. Andrew Laremy pleyed an excellent offensive gaine and wes rewerded with two goals. The firat goal wes an end-to-end solo effort and the second found ita Mark with help frein Dean Seten and Justin Fox. Fox and McKenzie rounded eut the scering with unassisted goals of their own. The defensive teain of Randy Walten, Jason Velacich, Jason King, Tim Liske, Kevin Rempel and Daniel Kosiw held Victoria Village's scoring oppertunities te only three. Aiding the offence te taly up a record of 32 shots on net. were Jordan Potter, Bobby Scott and Nicolas Cotter. Jen Cotton had an eutstanding gaine, scoring three timesad setting up one. Whitby's second gaine was played egainst a very strong teain fromn Richmond Hill. In' an exciting gaine, the two teains sketed end te end- with few good scoring chances. Erica Giles opened the scoring late in the first half on a power-play shot with a defender dragging her te the ice. Richmond Hill responded with a power play goal of their own twe minutes later. The gaine turned in Whitby's faveur when Jen Harold scored te end the first haif and again te stert the second haîf. The visiters scored again late in the gaine te make the score 3-2, but goals by Giles and Natasha Carter carried Whitby te a 5-2 win. Whitby's defence of Kara Easton, Arme Henderson, Jean Templeman and Lea Hugel was outstanding in stifhing a very strong Richmond Hill attack. Call-up Heather Hunat played extremely well in net against girls four te five years her senior. Whitby's third gamne was a return match at Brooklin againat Ennismore. In a significantly more difficult gaine than the previous encounter in Ennismore, the forward lime of Erin Carroll, Giles and Carter were unstoppable. Weaving an offence that did a superb jeob of moving the ring around the offensive zone, the line accounted for four goals and eight assists on the way te an 8-4 victory. The other ine of Kara Easton, Megan NeilIy and ichelle Therieult worked very hard in the corners and dug hard everywhere te produce the other four goals, two by Theriault and two by Easten. The def'ence again played extremely well, controlling the flow of the gaine and turning. aside a deterrnined effort from Ennismore. Hurst agein played very well in net. 4 points for Williams On Dec. 4, Whitby played beague rivais Oshawa and came away on the short end of a 5-2 losa Scoring for Whitby were Davis and Sarah Larocque.
