The main advantage of a spal 1<1W! ie that it in onS of the few remaing imethode' oplitting income between spounes. The reasoning is simple: one icorne of $60,000 is ted much more than two incomes of $30,000, therefore you get to keep more for yourself if the income i. aplit. Spousal RRSPs also enable more effective use of the pension incom tax credit. By having a spousal RRSP, you cari ensure that both spouses are able to draw up $1,000 pension income, tax-free. A further advantage of a spousal RRSP is that it enables an individual. over age 71 to contribute to an RRSP. Normally, once a taxpayer han reached 71, they are no longer allowed to contribute to an RRSP. Howeyer, if the taxpayer's spouse is not yet 71, RRSP contributions cari be made to a spousal plan, even if the taxpayer ins71orover. If y ou were earxung over $30,000 when you mnade the contribution, you would-have received a 42 per cent tai rebat. for your contribution. If your spouse has no other source of retirement income, more tItan $7,000 (basic and pension income credits) per year could be withdrawn with no income tai being repaid. What a nice bonus. Amounts above the exemptions, but less than $30,000, would be taxed at 27 per cent. That's still a 15 per cent return on your money, courtesy of the tax department. Other points of interost Spousal RRSPs are flot for short-term applications. Money taken out of a spousal RRSP within three years of the most recent contribution will be taxed in the hands of the higher income-earning spouse. Under a marriage breakdown, spousal RRSPs are still considered fazmly assets. It dos not matter whose name is on the accounit it will b. divided evenly. The higher income spouse can contribute to a personal and a spousal RJRSP as long as the two amounts do flot exceed the maimum allowable limit. Therefore, the lower income spouse should also contribute the maimum to his/her own personal plan. Dkrek Dutka is a inancial consultant in the »Why/ Osha uça area.
