Operations committee passed a report Monday recommendin~ that the traffie calming devîces -- concrote islande put on tho roadway in such a way that traffic h as to slow down to g between them -- bo testod at the two intersections for a ono-year period. The test requires the support of 60 per cent of residents living within 120 mettes of the devices. Traffic studios would ho con- ducted before and after the in- stallation to determine their effectiveness.. If council passes the recom- mendation, works staff will sur- vey the two areas and report back before going ahead with the test. Residents in both areas have *reiosly asked the Town te, Pnstalu multi-way stops at the intersections but staff found thoy weren't warranted. North York has beon testin; the «traffic calming devices since last Novembor and han found them "reasonably succees- fui," according to pubic works diroctor Wayne Hancock. Hancock's departient has corne up wiith gudelines for the use of the circes. Aznong them are: * the radius of each circle be designed for oach individual intersection, which will allow cars to drive along a straight lino "without having to merge into the throat of the intersecting street. * the circle allow space for garbage trucks, snow plows, b uses and emergency vehicles te get through and not b. jnstalled on main roads. * that rosidents requestinq a circle submit a petition outlîinng their reasons for wanting one.
