An Oshawa lawyer, Furlong, 52, was the first MPP for Dur- ham Centre when the riding came into existence in the 1987 élection. He was defeated by White in the NDP sweep of Ontario three years later. Is it an anomaly or the result of the financial situation?» he asked. White said the government is under financial pressure for several reasons, y et has mana- e) d te keep trasfer payments te ntario hospitals, scliool boards and municipalities at existing levels. He noted that Whitby General recently received funding te help with its current shortfall and that, hospital officiais publicly welcomed the decision not toecut transfer payments. While not affixing blame, White also pointed out that Whitby General officiais refused te negotiate a local social con- tract agreement with their employees last year. "IRather than give their wor- kers and unions more say in the workplaee, they went for the maimum bit,» h e said. «Whitby General went for a dozen (da ys off without pay). Others hadL zero or smaller num- bers.» Neither hospital chief execu- tive officer Elizabeth Barton nor ve-rsident Marc Kealey were aiabe for comment Monday.
