In their opening round game Whitby faced off against Goulding Park. The selects opened the scoring midway through the first period on a goal by Caineron Munro assisted by Andrew Clark. Two minutes later, Whitby upped the mnargin te two on a goal bY Jason Turkington with the asset going te Mike Gubbels. The second period was ail Whitby asthey. scored four unanswered galste put the game out of reach. Goal-scorers were Andrew Holmes, Turkingtn, Clark and Matt Fortier. The third period was scoreless as Whitby was content te concentrate on defensive play and preserve tbe 6-0 shutout which was recorded by Steven Pigrain and Andrew Gubbels. Garne two saw Whitby matched up with North York league rivals Thornhill. Fres off their North York championship gaine victory, Whitby started slowly in the first Period as they held off a more aggressive Thornhill team. Thornhill pressed tbroughout the period but the goaltending was superb as Pigrain continually Whitby minor Zponsored by Consultants Imc., atom selects, Valuation entered the Shamnrock tournainent in Scarborough over the last two weekends and captured the consolation round division. Whitby's first gaine was against archrival Thornhill. hIa clsega1 Whitby lost 2-1. Whtbys loe goal was by Elliott Fitzsimmons on an assist from J.P. Galineault. Te lons placed Wbitby in the B division. WVhitby then defeated Cedar 1*111 3-0. Scoring for Whitby were Mike Lever, Galipeatult and Matthew Grahamn.- Matt Redshaw and Chris Foxwell shared the shutout. Whitby then defeated York York selects 5-L Grahamn recorded a bat trick and Ryan McMfichael and Parker scored the other goals. The final gaine in the teurniament was played against Scarborough Sabres Seleets. The teams Iooked evenly niatched at the start of the gaine, but Whitby had an easy win of 7-1. Graham recorded bis second hat trick of the tournament, Rob Muir scored twice and Kurtis Lindeil had the other. The strong defensive pairs of Carl DiCarlo and GregT'an Parker and Axnurawaye, Scu Gilard and Fitzsimmons were outstanding througbout the tournainent. The second period saw Whitby pick up their play. However, it was now the Thornhill netminders turn to make several outstanding saves and hold Whitby off the scoresheet. Thornhill opened the scoring on the power play part way through the second. Despite several oustanding scoing chances, Whitby was unable to get the puck past the oppoeimg goalie. In the third period, Whitby played more aggessively and were finally able to knot the score with 45 seconds gone in the period. Kawasaki counted the t3nýgoal. Less than a minute later Whitby were whistled for a penalty, giving Thornhill a power play. While killing the penalty Mike Gubbels, on a feed from Holmes, made no mistake as he rifled a shot under the crossbar for a one-goal lead., Whîtby held their victory celebration and end-of-season party at Don Cherry's. They voted captain Mattbew Graham as moot valuable player. Head coach is Larry Lindeil assisted by Mike Healy and Roy Iagris. Manager is Catherine Braekin. The Whitby Optimist Club will bold a junior igolf teurnament on Saturday, May 7, starting at noon, at Kedron Dells Golf Club in Oshawa. Entries are open te the first 60 boys and girls (aged 9 to 17) wbo reg*ter before May 4. Te entry fée is $10. Prizes and a barbecue supper will fol- low the teurnament. Wbhitby then moved on to the championship gaine against- Brampton. Whitby opened the scoring in the first minute on a goal from T1urkington. Bra ton scored what appeaedte be the equalizer later in the period but it was ruled the puck had been knocked in with a high stick. Whitby appeared te score a few minutes later. However, once again the goal was waved off. Play continued back, and forth with several excellent scoring chances by both teais but the period ended with Whitby leading 1-0. The second period saw both teama play a more physical game as scoring chances were infr-equent at best. With less than three minutes left in the period Whitby added te their lead as M.T. Walton, on a scramblein front of the net, scored an una"ssted goal te gîve, Whitby some breathing room. Brampton came out fiying ini the third period as they put tremendous pressure on Whitby who several turnes had difficulty clearing the puck from their own zone. But Whitby able te, withstand the barrage and with 1:17 left in the period, Gubbels scored te inake the final 3-0 for Whitby. Once again Gubbels and Pigram were oust.anding as they earned their second shutout of the teurnainent. The defensive corps of Brian Raine, Trevor Bremner, Derek Pollock, Nick Cowan, Josh Brimble and Andrew Holmes continued to provide steady, physical play as their opponents managed only one gz in al three gaines. The forward unit of Jason 1Tirkington, Mike Gubbels, Chad Kawasaki, Matt C. Walton, Matthew T. Walten, Caineron Munro, Matt Fortier, Andrew Clark, Brian Witruk and sub J.R. (YNeal played excellent two-way hocky during this teurnament addring the last six weeks of the season.
