The Durham Regional Housing Authority's decision last Decem- ber to ban smoking in ail its propertes «poisoned» the build- ingseformerly friendly atmos- phere and put an end to many social events, tenants sa. The issue came to a head last week when residents at 315 Col- borne St. W. met with several members 'of the Durham Regional Housing Authority board of directors and came up with a tentative solution. The tenants association will negotiate a 'use-of-space' agree- ment with the authority for one room. It will then be free te, allow peple te, smoke ini that room. Tenants Association president Verna Cain was «relatively pleased" with the meetings out- corne and feels the room will resolve the probleni, although she notes a lot of things still have te, be ironed out. «W. have a very good, mature group of people in this building under normal circumstances. 1 think we can get it and it can work weIl, even with their (the authority's) rules and regula- tionS.» Board chair Linda Porritt stressed the board wasn't chang- ing its no-smoking policy. 'The board. isn't saying that we're giving a smoking room.
