Scott MacDonell scored three goaIs and added three assists for Warriors who started strongly te build a big lead but then payed inconsistently te allow, Toronto back inte the contest. "The boys went back te their old playing days,» said co-coach Wayne Colley, referring te the team's probiem, in reent years, of maintaining focus. Colley, who with Peter Vipond shares coaching and general nanager duties, acknowledged, however, the teami is still in the rebuilding stages. «Hopefully this will be the year we turn thinge around.» In the newly aligned, two-divi- sion league Whitby will face Brapte, ~ron., ississauga, Peterb)orough and Scarborough four times each in the east divi- sion. Whitby will play only one game against each of the teams in the west division. That divi- sion is made up of St. Cath- arines, Six Nations, Burlington, Kitchener-Waterloo, Sarnia and last year's Canadian champion Orangeville Northmen. The te psix bowlers will head to the worlds. ervynck was part of the miost successful Canadian bowling team ever at the 1990 worid championsbip in Singapore, when hie and flive teammates picked up two goid and two silver medals. He surprised just about everyone earlier that year by winning at the Canadian national cbampionsbip after piacing llth in the Ontario compettîon. Although Vervynck bas been bowling for 20 years, be sajys it's the las t six years or so that be's been reaily compietitive. «I remember my first year bowling, I tbink I bad a wbopping 84 average.» He attributes bis euccess te _practice. "TIhere was a time four or flive years a go (that) I was down bere (Leisure Lanes) every day bowling," he says, adding that friends bave helped himi with bis game. Hie father got hlm interested in the sport as a boy and be soon began looking forward to going to the alley every week. He str.dggiled a lot" for a few years, averaging only around 170 "but I bad a lot of drive; I wanted to get botter. Vervynck practised bitting those spares around two hours a day- "sometimes less, soinetimes more» -- for 10 months ieading up to the 1990naialbmposis «I was determined te do well, to not embarrass myseif, and His goal1 was te make the final cut to the iast day. "That would h ave been it. I would bave been reaily happy, it was rny first nationale. "(Blut) I ended up winning ît -- that just shocked me; I was amazed.» He went on te, compete witb the Canadian teamn at the worlds and the Pan-Arn gamnes hix Havana, where he finished in fourtb place. The team was aise fourth. Things din't go quite se well after that, though. "When we bad the last nationals bere in Toronto two years ago, I didn't bowi very weil at all. I was reaily disappointed with how I did. "(Winning) this year is something I want te do for myseif. A lot of people will say the one year, you know, 'lie was a fluke, bie got lucky.'... I just want te go back and prove a point, te myself and everyone else, that I'rn not a fluke (and) that I can do this -- I know I can do this." And one of the team's top players last season, Matt Shearer, will rejoin Warriors in June when hie has completed his terni at a U.S. college where he has a field lacrosse scholarship. Shearer also played for Brook- lin Redmen on the major circuit last season. Warriors also have, a new look this season, their sweaters pre- dominantly black and white with red and Mlue trim.- And the club executive, ex pan- ded by eight, has been working te increase the exposure of War- riors lacrosse te attract more people te games at Iroquois Park. «We would like te see more people in the arena,» says new club president Mike Taylor, a former president f the Wlhitby Minor Lacrosse Association, who succeeded Bill Cocker who held the post for three years. ià ke oley, Taylor says the teami now bas a «good nucleus" of players with more great talent coming up through the system. «I'd like te see a Mînto Cup corne here in the next couple of years,» says Taylor, admittingr it will be a difficuit task considler- ing the abundance of talent on a few other teamis. Taylor and the executive are also working te improve the team's finances. Many more sponsors were added so that the team program grew te 24 pages. Next Tues day, Mississauga will again visit Whitby, game time 8 p.m. In iast week's gamne, Shaydon Santos, Jason Croshie and Jonas Derks each had two goals for Warriors.
