Great hitting and outstandingr pitcbing combined for victories over Pickering, Peterborough and two agamnst Ajax. Michael Bekiaris and Matthew Tosoni combined for rine strikeouts te defeat Ajax 10-6 in the annual Mayor's Cup on opening day at Whîtby. Pickering played host the following Tuesday night when Whitby squeezed out an 8-7 win. Frday, May 13 proved anything but unlucky for the Whitby team as they defeated the Ajax squad again, this time 13-2. Brandon Petch and Tosoni shocked the Ajax teami witb a brilliant no-hitter. Whitby closed out the week with an offensive explosion against the bost Peterborough teani. Twelve bits belped produce 17 runs, while great defence allowed only one run. R edmen FROM PAGE 20 changes were warranted wiIl be determnined on the floor, says Curtis, noting ail doubts about the executive shuffle will be answered should Redmen reach the Mann Cup. "It's the teami and the enter- tainment value, that's what it bouls down to," says Curtis, who performed media relations for the women's lacross champion- ships in Oshawa last year, and was asked by Cotton to performi the same duties for Redmen. The road te the Mann Cup will be a diflicult one, however, with Mann Cup champion Brampton Excelsors and an improved Six Nations teamn likely te be the strongest teams. Six-Nations bas added seyeral top-notch players while Bramp- ton, accordng te rumour, may not see the return of John Tavares, the league's best player, the most valuable player in the U.S. pro league, and one of the gante s superstars. But Curtis says Redînen begzan training earlier. than the other teams, and a ugo()d mix» of young and older players as well as a "good team atmosphere» will push the team te the top. Other teams in the leagmie are Owen Sound, Peterborough, Fergus and Brampton. Two special event nights are planned this season: a repeat of last season's successful Minor Lacrosse Night when about 500 local young players came out te, see Redmen play; a planned Red- men reunion night when past players froni Redmen teams will Club on Saturday night. James Mullane froin Moter City engaged Colin Matcbem of the Ajax oxin Club in a ,piri- ted welterweight bout won by Mullane witb a technical knock- out with 20 seconds remaining in the third and final round. There were six bouts held on the night and Mullane was cho- sen «best hoxer of the evening" It was the first bout for the 16-year-old Whitby resident since he broke his hand in an earlier bout -- a knockout win. "Hle hgs no more problems witb his hand,» says Moter City manager/promoter Don Nelson. Mullane weighed in at 140 pounds and Matchem 148 poundB in. the bout for 147- pounders, but the weight dif- ferential didn't stop Mullane. But Nelson says club instruc- tors willw ork te increase Mul- lane's weight for future bouts, includingthe provincial junior championships to be held in Ajax June 4 and 5. Another Whitby boxer, Elliott Wren, lost a aplit decision te Ed McLean of the Champions club in Toronto. "I thought Elliott won hands down,» says Nelson of the mid- dleweight bout, adding the judges saw the figbt dferently. «We'll be bac~k to get him (McLean) again.» The third Motor City boxer, Les Bouchard again loat te, Jay Corcoran of PZàterborogh, this tinie in a split decision in the middleweight contest. Nelson says Bouchard, bat three points -- for ducking too low, holding and low blow -- and that probably was the difference. "He won the fIght b ut he lost the match,» says Nelson. Corcoran won the previous match between the two boxers, in another close contest'. About 300 people turned out at the &.S. McLjaughlin Armouries in downtown Oshawa for what was the club's flrst show. Nelson says «mrost of the the bouts wore really good,» and those attending uwere just going crýK,,por..s got nowhere te go but up now.» He says the. night at the Armouries w"~ given te the club free of charge, and that haîf the proceeds firom the bar and food also went te the club. «We broke even,» says Nelson. He says the goal was te make a little money te buy equpen or the «kids,» but hé is nonetheless satisfied by the first show and the good response.
