Weather permitting, the Gor- don Street launch could be ready to use in two months -- one year afler it was scheduled to be in operation -- an optimistic Mayor Tomn Edwards said last week. The only thing preventing the municipality from putting the finishing touches on the $44 1,000 project is final approval from Ontario Environmient and Energy Minister Bud Wildman. According to Egdwards, that approval is expected shortly. «Ail we were waiting for Jeaa document to go to -the minister,» hie said. The document arrived last week and was quickly signied and sent to Queen s Park, Edwards said. "I talked to the minieter's assistant today (Thursdayv) and we ex oc it (approvl) post haste, he said. Towni officiaIs have been wait- ing more than a year to open the launch The new facility will replace the eiting Brock Street ramp which is too smaîl and too close to traff ic. However, ministry staff had concerne about possible con- taminants in the material on which the launch was built. The launch was constructed on material which had been dredged out of the harbour and us"d to build Up the banks of the new docks. But the ministry declared the area. to be a landfill site and ordered drains installed to pro- vent leachates (water runofi) from re-entering the lake. The municip ahty complied with the minlstryps reqiuest, but approval was not immediately AothcosMMn sTonconi Aët lastM ndysTwcoci meeting, councillors Marcel Brunelle and Dennis Fox blasted governnient bureaucrats for the delay. Thyclaimed the launch could he n operied last summer had ninistry staff not dragged their hel on the matter. Edwards sympathized with the counicillors, but pointed out that without Wildman'si approval, the Town could not open the lanh on its own. 0 "eWe can't do it until we have the minister's authority to go ahead » Edwards tôld TheFree Press.' Work stili needed to be done on the launch includes paving the parking lot and installing lights, Edwards said. «Provided the round la okay we're hoping for te publie open- ing of the boat launch this July,- hie said. ý- 1
