The firet gaine was against Ajax and Whitby inade up for a pre-season loss to Ajax by winning the season-opener 6-4. Ajax' startect the gaine strongly, scoring four times ini the first two innings, hefore Whitby starting pitcher Lars Clay settled down and shut down Ajax il the seventh when Dave Clarke took ovor and nailed down the win for Clay with some outstanding relief pitching. Whitby's offence caught fire in the third inning, scoring three turnes on timely hits from Derek Grieve, Sean Donnelly, Colin Cockburn and Clarke. Ryan Grundie worked a bases-loaded walk te bring home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the Whitby defence shut down Ajax for the win. In the second gaine against Peterborough, pitchers Ryan Balan and David Yarwood came within one inning of a no-hitter, ending the day with a combined one-hitter. Balan, the startîng' pitcher, was oustanding, mixing speed and locating his fastball for five strong innings, before Yarwood took over in the sixth and overpowerd Peterborough hitters to nail down the 4-1 win. Balan helped his own cause by driving in Whitby~s firet run, as Kyle MeFarlane scored for Optimists. Chrie D'Abert had the big hit of the gme driving in Giove and RynCrotin in the ixth with a sharp single down the left fleld line. David Milne made a fine running catch early in the gaine in right field and held the base runner at second with a string throw back te the infield. Ryan Crotin helped the teain in the eighth inning with an unassisted double play te stop a Peterborough rally. Clay and lYAibert also combined for a great play in the ninth inning by nailing the only Péerboroug player to get a hit, when ho trieà te steal third base on a passod bail.
