Whitby played through rain and sweltering heat, mixed with long delays to sweep the tournamnent with four straight 'Vins. Whitby's first gaine was a 19-2 win over Flesherton. Lare Clay went the distance for the win, striking out 12 over five innings. Sean Donnelly's bat was hot in this gaine as ho pounded out two doubles and drove in four runs. Ryan Grundie capped a great gaine with a double in the fourth inning to drive in three runs. The second gaine was against host Bolton and proved te be the best gaine, of this tournament. David Yarwood was outstanding, striking out nine and giving Whitby Raiders under-14 rep soccer teain, sponeored by the Bank of Montreal, bas begun their 1994 season with a bang. Returning tired and injured from their victory in the Guelph tournament over the Victoria Day weekend, Raiders faced Durhamn rivaIs Oshawa Turul in their flrst league gaine on June 1 at tbe Oshawa Civie. Despite their injuries and the cold, windy weather conditions, Whitby managed a 3-2 win over Oshawa. At hall' time, the score was tied at 1-1 on a goal by Tope Akinbiyi. In the second hall', Mark Cassidy converted a free kick by Matt Brady te take a 2-1 Iead. Brady later sent the bail up the right wing for Akinbiyi who chipped it over the goalie's head. In their second league game on June 3, Raiders faced Olympic Flaine froin Scarborough and again recorded a 3-2 victery. Daniel Demmmer pîayed an excellent gaine in goal, holding the opposition off the scoreboard in the first hall', for a 1-0 Iead at hall' time. Playing midfild, striker Mark Engelage sent a Under- lOs win 5-1 The Whitby under-lO rep soccer teain, sponsored by Domin's Pizza, Golden Griddle and Neilson Cadbury, continued their winning ways in the Central Soccer League by beating- the visiting North York Hearts 6-1 on .June 15. Even though the bome aide was stricken with injuries and Nortb York took an earîy Iead, the result was seldoin in doubt. The gamne'smoot valuable player, liam Reddo, tied the score before balf-time. Left back Mike Denning joined fullback Tyler Mattin on the injury list but the reorganized defence of B.J. Wingers Paul Kontos and Ciaran Thompson continued te suppîy the crosses until eventuafly Luke Bowerman scored three tirnes. Wbitby's beague record is four wins, a boss and a fie. Novices winiess in tournament Whitby was winîess in four gaines at a novice lacrosse tour- nament in Niagara-on-the-Lake recently. Whitby bast 6-3 tePelham 6-1 te St. Catharines, 5-4 te kia- gara-on-the-Lake and then 9-1 te Niagara-on-the-Lake in the B championship final. Shane Bonner was most valu- able player for Whitby in the final. Ryan Rorabeck had three goals and Bonner and Aaron Gallas two each for Whitby in the tour- nament. Whitl;y hada lO-hour weat on Sunday for' the finale before they could meet Tottenbam for the championsbip. Kyle Mc arlane had a great ganptching five strong innings for te win, before Ryan Balan took over to nail down the save as Whitby wnn the tournament and lVidgets ousted in semis Whitby Network Architecture minor midget basebail teain went as far as the semi-finals at a tournament in North Bay over the weekend. Darryl Jennings started the flrst gaine against North London and pitched the whole gaine, allowing only four hits and for a 9-1 vlctory. Terry Arges scored three runs while hitting a triple and other runs were scored by Mat Bakker, Jason Linden, Aaron Lo, Jainie Turner, Greg Pomroy and Chris Goring. Game two had a different slant when Whitby lost te, Sault Ste. Marie, who had excellent bitters as well as a pitcher who knew how te throw around Whidtby's bats. Facing Hamilton, Goring, Dave. Hough and Jerad McGord combined te beat Hamilton 11-1. The semi -final game was played against a strong North Bay team. Jennings, McCord and Hough pitched a great gaine but tiring arms were no match for the bot northern bats. Excellent flelding plays by Wes Lloyd and Dave Sluto p lus a hot bat by Linden and three runs scored by Arges kept the game close for a 10-5 loss te the home teain.
