Answers to Whitby Trivia from page 20 1. Heydenshore Park was niamed atter a brother and sister who once owned the land where the park is now. They were Lawrence Heyden (1835-1906) and Barbara ýeïden (1830- 1916>, whoived in Toronto. 2. James Holden (1l828-1881), managing director of the Whitby, Port Perry and Lindsay Railway, had a charter ta build his railway to any point in Canda. He died while trying to raise money for it in Manitoba. 3. Additions were made ta the north and south ends of R.A. Sennett Public School in 1958 and a g ymnasium was buit at the badkin 1987. 4. George Henry Ham (1847- 1926) was known as the Mark Twain of Canada because of the humorous stories h. told as an after- dinner speaker. He lived in Whitby from 1851 to 1871, and is buried in St. John's Anqlican Cemetery at Port Whitby. No more politicians By Alox Shepherd Let's face it, Canada is over-governed. Take Durham Region, as an example. W. have four representatives in Ottawa, f ive members at Queen's Park, a regional government with approximately 32 members, and 66 mayors and councillors in ail the municipalties combined. Has this much representation served the interests of y0u, the voter, or merely created fiefdoms at the various government levels for the polit icians? What we need in this country ls botter politicians, not more of them. This is the crux of the argument 1 made ta the Procedure and Hause Aff airs Committee meeting recently in Ottawa. The committee is looking at ways ta improve the pracedure for drawing up federal constituency baundaries. Most af the MPs appearing before the cammittee argue for no change because they are scared they won't get re-elected f acing a diff erent electarate t han thase who f irst sent t hem ta Ottawa. 1 tald the committee the number of federal ridings should b. left at the present 295, or if the number is changed, then decreased. In the US., the number of congressmen is fixed ai 435. Adding the 100 senators ta that, there is one federal representative for approximately 467,000 people. In Canada it works out ta approximately one MP for every 73,000 people. When yau look at the population of each country i's not hard ta see Canadians, as a whole, with fewer people get much more govemnment than the U.S. Canadian taxpay ers cannot afford mare MPs. Canadians, right now, are one of the most over-represented democracies on the planet. W. should be using aur energies ta, make Pariament work more effectively for you with the MPs already there, instead of adding more MPs warking ineff ectively. Rt is hard now for MPs ta particupate in committee work, question periad and variaus other duties because af the sheer numbers of MPs in the House. There is no doubt in my mind the number af MPs in Ottawa should be capped at 295. At some point they should b. allowed ta increase, but it is clear for now thet based on future population growth there is no need to increase at this point. People do not want more politicians, they want better government. Taxpayers want ta save money, not spend it on a government thet is, af itself, a federal job creatian project. Alex Shepherd is MP for Durham niding which includes Whitby north of Taunton Poad. To reach his constituency office, cati 721-7570 (Oshawa).
