There were 2,730 homes sold in the first six nionths of 1994 compared witb 2,352 in 1993. The number of sales in Whitby were up 17 per cent with the dollasr volume up by 20.9 per cent over this saine period in 1993. Oshawa's sales were up 21.4 per cent with a dollar volume up by 25.1 per cent. Bowmanville's increase in sales over 1993 was 37.6 per cent with the dollar volume up 40.9 per cent. Scugog's increase in sales was 9.8 per cent with a dollar volume up by 18.7 per cent. "The market bas been strong the first six nionths of this year but with the recent drastic increase in interest rates, and the effect of summer holidays, this will definitely have a negative impact on the real estate market," says Anita Witty, president of the Durham Region Real Estate Board. "On the bright side, financial analysts are predicting that interest rates will start to decline in the last quarter of the year."
