Kinsmen novice A rep team captured the peewee chaLmpionship at the RAY Broadworth Meniorial lacrosse tournament in Gloucester July 9-10. A five-man shootout was needed to decide the hard.fought championship gamne against Gloucester Gyhons. Whitby was behind 2-1 at the end of the first peiod and second period goals by Mike Carroll and Jay Harrison kept Whitby close at a 4-3. With under five minutes to play, Mike Morrison scored te tie the garne at 5-5 and send the decision to overtime. The two teanis played a scoreleas five minutes, putting the title in the hands of the 10 boys chosen for the shootout. After the first four shooters there was still no score, but Morrison, shooting last, came through with a perfect shot to beat t he Gloucester goalie. Whitby's netminder Ricky Passfield was outstanding throughout the tournament with two shutouts, 13-0 over Tyendinega, 18-0 over Oswego and another near shutout in a 9-1 win over Nepean. Passfield's scoreless overtime and shootout sealed the victory for Kinsmen. The novice team is coached by Corny Derks. Morrison, Harrison and Mike Carroll fllled in for Andrew Hewson, Andrew Glen, Kyle Schroer and Jamie Barton who were unable to make the trip.. C0+ STEEL t$ LASCO. Bayford leads Ontarlo to rouler hockey titie Shayne Bayford led Ontario to a 7-6 win in the final and the Canadian roller hockey cham- pionship recently. He scored three goals' and had two assists in the win over Brit- ish Columbia at the national championships held July 8-10 in Mississauga. He and brother Corey Bayford, both of Whitby, have been mem- bers of the Ontario team for the past six years .-- each .year Ontario has won the national championship. Whitby girls, softball Corey, 18, broke bis arm recently while mimie skating and saw only one shift during the roller hockey championships. But it was enough playing time te hoe eligible to try out in August for the Canadian team that will go te the world championships in Santiago, Chule in November. Shiayne, who won several Canadian championships as an- artistic roller skater, is assured of a p lace on the team as he is one of the game's top scorers.
