Foikes worked for more than three years on the musical, 'The Cafe of Romance,' written by Michael Morrison. A musical with comedy and drama, The Cafe cf Romance looks ai; issues in Canada. Set in a "magical" cafe, Harra Cafe, on the banka of the St. .Lawrence River, it has obvious metaphors about Canadians' lives and problema. The works in the exhibition, which are taken from the gallery'a permanent collection, show Fairley's muted, austere colours and heavy outline as well as paintinga which show the artist's use of- large abapes, such as barrns and piles cf hay, dominating a roling countryside.
