The team came up a~n some teugh competition dring Midgets seek provincil titie The Whitby midget A lacrosse team, undefeated this season, is one of four teams that wiil com- pete for the 1994 provincial titie at the Ontario Summer Cames in Ottawa starting this week.. The team, coached by Jim Bisbop and sponsored by Brine, has not only thrashed teams at their own age ievel but aise beaten several older-age teams due te superior cenditioning and team play. But Whitby faced fierce com- petition from Peterboroughi at the qualifying tournament Juiy 29-31 and needed a solid effort te maintain their unbeaten record. Cee Nash was soiid in net for Whitby at the teurnament and aise had four points. Niall Maynard had 14 points, Jason Wardl13, Derek Suddons and Marty OBrien il each, Zac Aitken and Gavin Prout 10 each, Pat Jones and Brad ]Reed eight eacb, Paul Sallue, Steve Death and Steve 'Vituk seven each, David Stabiie six, Luke McKay and Mike Densham five each and Brian Power one. the recent regional playdowns in Oshawa te gain entry inte the prestigieus event. Whitby defeated Peterboroughi and Kingston, and then inoved te the semi-finals with a 10-0 deci- sien over Pickering on Jeremy Schott's no-itter. Whitby doubled Cobourg 4-2 in Whitby Roy's Enterprise are the 1994 Eastern Ontario Basebail Association mniner mosquite ieague champions. Whitby put it ail together te, win the five-teamn, double- knock-out teurnament held in Cra.fton July 30 and 31. Ini the flrst round, Whitby squared off with Cobourg and breezed te a 9-4 victery. The win set up a second-round match against Ajax who bas been giving Whitby trouble all year. The saine held true in this gaine as Ajax stung Wbhitby with a 13-8 loss. That was bad news for Peterborough who bad already defeated Ajax and Pickering in the flrst two rounds. Whià tby came eut iike a pack of woives and scored 19 runs in the first five innings. That was enough te, end the gaine because of the mercy rule and send Whitby te, the semi-finals. The final score was Wbitby 19, Peterborough 9. Whitby's fourth-round game turned eut te be a rematch with Ajax. Mattbew Tosoni took the rubber for Witby against Tan Wight, the liard tbrower from Ajax. Both pitchers were true te form as they battied each other for seven scoreles inninsWgh scattered tbree bits and struck eut 10 but Tosoni matched hlm allowing five bits and striking eut seven. Botb tearns often get runners te third base but were denied from scoring by cluteh defence or strong pitchxng. The tension was higbest in the Ajax seventh when, with two eut and one on, Tosoni issued bis firat .twe walks of the game te load the bases. Tosoni summoned up the last of bis energy and struck eut the next batter te siama the door on Ajax. A.fter Whitby was beld scorel ess in the last of the seventb, the two starters left the game baving pitched tbeir the semi-final as Jerzy Aronowicz got the save and Jason Valin get the pitching vic- tory. In the final Oshawa beld a 4-1 iead before Wbitby tied the score 4-4 in the fifth inning. Newport's decisive triple was in the sixth inning. The next game was the championship game featuring Whitby in a rematch with Peterborough who had beaten Pickering for the second time that weekend. This was unexpected since Pickering finished in first place for the regular season while Peterboroughi finished last. Whitby. certainly had ne trouble as they coasted to another five-inning mercy te win the game and the EOBA titie. The final score was 15-5. Petch looked after the mound for ail five innings and allowed just three bits and two walks while striking eut three. He was ne slouch at the plate, either, as he belted two singles and a triple for four RBIs. Other hitters were Tosoni with a single, double and triple for tbree RBIs, Adamn Bright with two singles and three RBIs, and Mithael May with two singlee and an RBI.
