Horse racrn teletheatres in region restaurants An agreement between the Ontario Jockey Club and Pîcov Downs quarterhorse faciity has been struck that will see thoroughbred and standardbred horse racing action beamed into Durham Region eating establishments. After the Ontario Racing Cômniiesion granted Picov Downs a licence to operate teletheatres in Pickering, Ajax and Whitby, owner Norni Plcov entered inte a joint venture partnership with the Ontario Joc e Clu b that will provide the satellite signal and wagering technology. The teletheatres will feature wagering on ail of the Ontario Jockey Club's thoroughbred and standardbred racing prograins with the exception eSunda afternoons during the 21-wek period froni the haginraing of May through Octohar. The two parties have agreed that simulcasting will -only take place at Picov Downs while the I[HOPKINS..ST.]..... .. .. .. .. .. . . ...... . . 9 . track offers its live quarterliorse races during those Sunda. The first of theseacilities, kno-VnM as Picov Champions, came on lime Aug. 2 at Mud liens Taps & Grill located on Kingston Road in Pickering. "Thege teletheatres will directly benefit the 26,000 quarterhorse enthusiasts in this pro vince," suggests Picov. "The purses at: Picov Downs will increase and that will have a positiveeconomicimpact right on down through the industry. '"Without simulcasting, and chairman Drea's help, 'Picov Downs woulcl have likely closed .after 25 years in business," adds Picov. Crowde had dwindled under the 300 mark, but the OJC simulcasting has increased attendance te between 600 and 700 each Sunday.
