Whitby's under-9 girls' select soccer team defeated the host Unionville teain in the final on Sunday to capture the championship at the first annual Unionville-Millikin select soccer tournament. The Whitby Junior Marigolds struck early, at the two-minute mark, as Alicia Julian converted an Ashley Buchanan pass to give Whitby a 1-0 lead. Despite a strong wind blowing in their faces, Marigolds carried the balance of play in the first haîf. In the second haîf, with the wind to their backs, Whitby pressed their attack, coming close several imes.
