Page 24, Whitby Free Press, Wednesday, September 7, 1994 Redmenl ouste, hefsgotoMann Cup Six Nations will battie New Westminster Salmonbellies in the Mann Cup championship beginning this week. Chiefs earned a spot in the Canadian senior box lacrosse champion ship by defeating Brooklin Redmen 1 1-5 last ect- nesday night.. Thiat completed a brilliant comeback by Chiefs, who lost the first two games of the Ontario final series te Redmen before bouncing back with four straight victories. Six Nations turned the series around after their second loss by mpaizing defence, and the denegrew stronger as the series went on. Brooklin's ofl'enoe was, for the most part, restricted te outside shooting as Chiefs kept them on the perimeter. And when the Redmen attackers manaeed to get in close, Chiefs goahie Bill Gerrie was solid. Gerrie, too, was a different goalie in the last four game as he rebounded from sub-par perf'or- miances in the first two games. John Tavares, one of the best forwards in the game, again led Chiefs as he scored three goals in last Wednesday's win in Osh- weken. But it was a balanoed attack, showirig the surprising depth of the Chiefs when it was felt that Redmen had more experienced, talented players, that was again evident in the sixth game. Damrs Kilgour, whose over- time goal in game four may have been the most pivotai point of the series, scored twice while Rich Kilgour, Dwyaye Jacobs, Cam Bomberry, Paul Gait, John Rosa and Derek Graham had singles. Peter Park and Gary Gait each had two goals for Red~men whie Tom Marechek had the other goal. Greg Van Siekle had two assists. Redmen won the regular sea- son championship with Six Nations close behind. Chiefs' lineup has several members, in- cluding Tavares and Travis Kil- gour, froni hast year's Mann Cup championshir Brampton team.
