More than 40 artists will exhibit their work in the festival to be held in a 90,00-qare-footwarehouse, the former Alger Press building, 61Charl esSt., Oshawa. "It is the biggest art event that has ever been held in Durham Region," says Steven Frank, one of the artists and organizers of the festival. "People are in for a big surprise when they corne to see the show." A few of the artists have national and international reputations, and the Artfest is held to give area residents a chance to see "challenging works of art in less conventional, yet more accessible, environments." Some of the Whitby artists in the festival include Sean McQuay, Ruth Read and KGim Stallworthy. The artists will exhibit a range of work including photography, painting, drawing, printmaking and sculp- ture. On Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 24 the Durham Shoestring Performers will hold a series of surprise performances in which the actors and the art will be interacting.
