SCALL ROSEMAR:Y BROWN à4S33-221M By Mark Reesor An eniotional lea from a resi-' dent convinced Whitby ope- rations committee We approve a three-way steop at Winterberry Drive ana Waller Street Monday. The decisien, which was con- trarv te a recommendation by publicwoks directer Wayne Hancock who argued the stop is unwarranted and would be in- effective', will be voted on by full council Monday Committee did go along with Hancock's advice We remove an intersection island installed at Winterberry and Waller in July. The other island, at Athol and. Gilbert streets, has proven "moderately successful» and will be left in place for tbe remainder of a 12-month trial. Hancock said there's no indica- tion the Waller island slowed people down. "In fact, statistics reveal that conditions have wor- sened.» "My children are caged in the backyard; they're net allowed eut unless they're with an aduit,» said Brian Heavrin, wbo's lived at the corner of Winterberry and Waller for'about four years. "We don't need te see another tragic accident before we do something,» he said, referring te the death of nine-year-old Martha Beale, who was struck and killed by a pickup truck while crossing Waller Street at Rolling Acres Drive last Novem- ber. uWe at Winterberry and Wal- ler don't see any children. The only time you see your children is when you grab your kidsin your arms and -carry them next door te the neighbour's bouse se they can go in another backyard. It's unfair, -- they live like caged animais... because of this Whitby Hydre will host the annual meeting of district #1 of the Municipal Electric Association Oct. 2 te 4. District #1 is comprised of 79 municipal electric utilities in eastem Ontario in an area beunded by Lake Ontario on the south, Cornwall on the east, Whiitby on the west and on the north by Peterborough, Pembroke anid Ottawa. Meetings for the expected 160 delegates will take place at Le fear, this paranoia' that the parents ail have." Heavrin. is se, concerned, he says the cressing guard the last week "bas been myseif. I've been off work this week and I've been out there with the kids, just making sure that they're getting across the streets... (and) trying te, educate the eider children Wo helpthe younger children." ]Headmits motorists may not corne t a complete stop at stop signs. But Heavriri says he and his neighbours, some of them Durham Refgional Police officers, feel stop~ signs will at least slow "he people that are speeding are the people who live in your neighbourhood," centre ward councillor John Doîstra told Heavrin. «They've got te learn Wo slow down." He moved that committee vote te instail the signs. "This may not be the solution, but te sit back and wait is not the answer,» he said, suggesting staff can look at what else can bïe done te slow down drivers in the area. «I think we need'more data. I don't want te indiscriminately instaîl stop s "n, said regional councillor MÎarcl Brunelle, who cited studios which show people tend te ignore unnecessary stop signe, making those intersections even more dangerous. He says pedtestrians and dri- vers expect vehicles te, ste and accidents occur when theydfon't. Brunelle voted against the signs but committee chair Judi L-ongfield supported . Dolstra's motion. Hancock agreed -te a committee request te do a pedes- trian count and speed survey, at times suggested Iby residents before Monday night's councif meeting. Charge dismissed A sexual assault charge against a -Bramip ton doctor was dismissed in Whitby court last week.' Dr. Jeffery Pereira was char- ged with sexual assauit in Juiy 1992 whiie working at the Whitby Urgent Care Clinic. The char ge was laid after a 28-year-oid Whitby woman aile- gedi she was teuched inappre- priately during an April 5 visit te, the clinic. The judge dismissed the charges, saying there were a numbery of discrepancies ia the woman's testimony about Pereira's examination and in statements she previously made te police. Pereira still faces a charge in connection with another aileged sexual assault. Peol Regional Police charged Pereira with sexual assauit and sexual exploitation in July 1993 aftor an incident at a Brampton walk-in clinic. The charges came after a 17- year-old patient complained the docter fondled her breasts during an examination in April 1993. That case has yet te go te trial. Gala Convention (;entre Ili Whitby.
