Rewritten for contemporary audiences by Bill Johnson, the current play encourages audience participation. Hence when villainess Ida Rhinegold is conteznpîating suicide, there were calîs from the audience to "Jump!" and "Getit over wth." . The Oxford Dictionary defines melodrama as "drama marked by crude appeals te emotion." There is absolutely ne subtlety in this, production and that's what makes it so enjoyable. It teck onîy a few minutes before the audience picked up their role and started booing and cheering on eue. The story is about as basic as they come - the dark and evil villain who will stop at nothing to swindle wealth from the innocent, pure and unsuspecting. Everything about - this production is a caricature, from the cardboard moustache on the viltain to the fake blond pigtaiis on the heroine. Ail of the rolés are delight shamnelessly overacted, but since that's what the script cails for, then the actors must be said to have perforxned their roles well.
