Whitby General vice-president Marc Kealey'confirmed Monday that'effective Nov. 1, the hospital will be short one nurse. However, it may .be a 'few months before anyone is in danger of' losing ber/his job, Kea- ley stressed. «V/e are in the position of having to do away withý one nursing po.csition »"he said. "But we are cloing our utmost to rationalize this through sick leave and maternity leave so that no one actually loses their job." Kealey blamed the decision squarely on the Iess frequent use o f th e hospital's emergency department. I n a cost-cutting inove earlier this year, bospital offliciais redu- ced emergency service from 24 hours to 14 hours due to declin- ing use after 10 . Kee said this pattern bas continued. «TMis is a consequence of peojle not using the bospital,» be «It's fine to save tbe bospital, but supporting the bospital is an even biger issue." The ilat-iter comment was a ref- erence to the activities of the Save Our General Hospital citi- zens' committee (see story on page 1). «We rely solely on our consti- tuency," said Kealey. "People have to support the hospital financially and use it. lt's not enougb to sign a peti- tion.» More than 27,000 people have signed SOGH's petition wbicb derands retention of acute care beaith services at Whitby General. Teresa Pritchard, president of Local 226 of the Ontario Nurses Association, estimated that it will be next spring at tbe earliest before someone is laid off.
