Wtih eight new players on the roster the tearn opened with a 4-3 win over a physical Ajax teain. Wildcats opened the scoring late in the firet period on a goal by J.R. ONeil assistod by Chris Laidley and Trevor Bremner. Whitby added to their lead early in the second on a goal by Dylan Chynoweth with assiste to Andrew Clark and Matt Portier. Ajax cut the lead to one. Whitby answered back seconds later on a goal by Sean Rayner assisted by Matt Walton and Garett Richard. Ajax counted two quick goals te start the third period and knot the score at three. Maj ors rebound to .win The Whitby Wildcats major atom AA hockey teain had a busy weekend, starting Oct. 28 when they .lest 2-0 te- undefeated Newmnarket. Julian Owen played solid between the pipes with help from. the defence of Andrew Hammer, John Gillard, Jef Pichut, Shawn Stephens and Scott Beetham. Whitby checked well and skated with the teani leaders in a penalty-riddled game. Whitby lok orward to a rematch next weekend ia Newmarket. On Saturday, Whitby defeated Bowmanville 3-2, on the strength of two goals by Ryan Farrow, assisted by Pichut and Bryan Mantle. Mantde scored on a rebound of Farrow's breakaway shot. Goalie Bryan Sand played tough and stayed focussed throughout the gaine. Other teain members are Dami Amurawaiye, Sean Brackin, Matt Grahamn, Rob Laba,, Tom Ricica, Jason Sledziewski and Nick Verkuyl. On Oct. 25 in Oshawa, Whitby played a superb defensive gaine before losing 3-1 late in the third period. The defense, along with goaltender Darryl Forsey, played a strong gaine. Kevin Peel scored for Whitby. In a penalty-filled game on Oct. 29 at Iroquois arena, Whitby bast 4-2 te Ajax-Pickering. Adamn Velacich led Whitby with a goal and an assist. Lucas Naylor also scored. On Oct. 30 ln Peterborough, Whltby fired 32 shots at the Peterborough goaltender in a fast, hard-fought garne before losing 4-0. at 4-1. Markhani added another goal early in the third te narrow the gap te two. Whitby answered eight seconds later on a goal by Clark. On Oct. 25 Whitby travelled te Marinera for a mid-week gaine and posted a 3-1 win. The first period was very fast-paced and Wildcats, ground Flyers The Whitby miner atein AA hockey team defeated Barrie 4-1 ever the weekend. In the opening period, superb goaltending by Whitby's Ian Upton and Barrie's netinner ketthe gme scoreless. U;the second, defenseman Robert Eberle made a sole rush, rounded the opposition net and backhanded the puck past a bewildered Barrie netininder. Shortly after, Adamn Thibedeau, on a fine pass from Matt Annis, made the score 2-0. Inspired forechecking by forwards Jeffrey Hase and Brandon Fowler, together with smart defensive pinys by Andrew Martland, Karen Farquharson and Robin Cote, helped preserve the two-goal margin. In the final frame, despite being short-handed, the tandem of Kevin Walsh and Justin Hawe prevented Flyers freinmeunting any offense. Instead, a great pase by Jason Connor to Jamie Millage made it 3-0 for the visiting Wildcats. Later, Whitby once again found the twine when Andrew Lamiet, on a pass frem Millage, made a great 'play te, beat the Barrie netminder, maldng it 4-0 Wihitby. Late in the third Barrie broke Upton's determined shutout bid. evenly matched as both teains showed fine examples of twe-way hockey. Justin Colline scored on a hard shet after a heads-up pass frein Paul Gray. The second period saw goalie Dan Fletcher manage te make the big saves when necessary. It wasn't until the third period that Quinte finally beat Fletcher on a hard shot just under the cresebar. Steve Death put Whitby ahead once again, assisted by Haynes and Gray. The final frame saw a multitude of miner penalties. However, the Whitby penalty-killing cembinations were able te defend against the Quinte power plays. Death, along with help frein Haynes, managed te get the insurance marker late in the third. Fletcher faced 39 shots. The second gaine on Oct. 30 in Whitby picked up where the previeus gaine ended. Both teains caine eut of the starting gate with hard physical play in mmnd. Colline once again started the scoring by sliding a shot along the ice into the net. Whitby went up by twe goals on a shot by Death. Quinte started the second period with a goal enly te be answered by Whitby on a smart give and go by- Haynes from Mfike Robertson. Quinte. did not give up and counted a goal late in the pedod and then added the only tally in the third, making it a 3-3 gaine. Tom Lawsen played another quality gaine in nets, making great caves despite heavy traffic la front.
