Celiac disease is a condition aifecting the surface ef tbe small intestine where the nutrients from the foods we ent are abser- bed by the body In people whe have celiac dis- r ease, the absorbing surface of the smali intestine is damaged or completel destroyed by the in- geto fgluten, a protein found in produets containing wheat,' rye, triticale, barley and oats. Recent studiesh ave shown that threugh the consumption of a gluten-free diet, the need for medication relating te the dis- order has decreased, and in some cases bas been eliminated. Approximateiy 13,000 peoplie in Canada suifer from cehiac dis- ease, according te reported cases. But there are many more suifer- ing from the disease. Linda Stewart of Whitby, chair of the Durham Regien chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association says there are many unreported cases in the regien. Recently the Durham chapter issued a press package for Celiac Awareness Week. Included was the case of seven-year-old Picker- ing boy, Gregory, and how he and bis parents deal with the disease. Gregory developed ail the syinptoms of Celiac Disease at an early age. After several weeks undergoing tests, he was diagnosed with the disease. After changing te a gluten-free diet, Gregory is again t he energe- tic bey bis parents are used te. Packed scheel lunches and birtbdays caused some concern about maintaining< the diet, because children h ke te share food witb their friends. But tea- chers were cooperative in bel ping Gregory feel conifortable about net sharing, and Gregory now bel ps te, monitor bis own diet. Fellowi ng the gluten-fre diet can be difflicuit and expensîve. However, the Canadian Celiac Association bas a registered tra- demark whicb manufacturers can put on tbeir gluten-free pro- ducts te, make things a littie easier for people witb celiac dis- ease.
