The win sent Anderson te, the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) champienship starting Thursday in Hmitn. It was the third straight LOSSA title for the Anderson teain, but it will bo their first visit te the Ontario high school championships -- this year, for the firet time, LOSSA champions go directly te the finals, whereas in previeus- years, the LOSSA finaiste met the York Region f'inaliste and the winner went te OFSAA. Markham was the roadblock that stoed in the way of Ander- son in previeus seasons. This year Markham je rankod third in the province. Anderson will face the number two ranked team in Ontario, St. Thomas More of Hamilton, in their firet game. '.Teams are eliminated from the OFSAA tournament when they lese two games. Bell backstrokes to gold in Brantford Matt Bell of Whitby won a gold and two bronze medals at a swim meet in Brantford Nov. 11-13. Bell, comnpeting as a member of the Durham Aquatic Club, won the 200-metre backstroke in the 13- and 14-year-old boys' category. Hie time of two minutes, 12.8 seconds was the fasteet thie year for the event in that age division. Mullane from the Motor City Boxing Club, won the inter- mediate (aged 16 and 17) welter- weight titie of provincial ama- teur boxing over the weekend in Toronto. Ho will represent Ontario in the Canadian championshipe in Montreal Feb. 9-12. 9I think he's going to win the Canadians," says Motor City manager and instructor Don Nel son, noting that the «plan» for Muhane has gone exactîy as scheduled. Mullane had previously faced Mason. In that match-up, Mul- lane knocked eut Mason in the second round. Mullane had a much tougher fight te get te the final. He earned a decision over Mohamn- med Axid of the Lansdowne club, 17-9 on points accumulated on the computer system (three judges must aIl press a button te register a scoring blow). Amid came on strong in the third and final round a fter Mul- lane dominated the first two. But Mullane eventually came on even etronger in the final round and twice almost knocked out Amid who barely hung on. Another Witby boxer from the Motor City club, Nick Pelletier, won a bronze medal in the senior novice middleweight division. He won hie first fight, a first round knockout over Steve Brown of the West End club. But he was outpointed by Neil Cave of the Jamestown club 17-12 in the second flight.. Cave dominated the first twe rounds but Pelletier dug deep te g*ve a strong performance in the final round to close the gap. Cave went on te win the gold. The silver medal in that divi- sien went te Emilie Mache of the Atlas Boxing Club,. who had ear- lier defeated another Whitby boxer, Elliott Wren, 14-11 on peints. Pickering tournament Novices skate to victory The Whitby miner novice M. hockey teain, sponsored byr Longley-Vickar, walked away with the Pickering A. tournament championship this past weekend, winning all five games. Backed by the strong Koaltending duo of Geoffrey Niblettan Justin White, along with the defence of Femi Amurawaiye, Daniel Dempsey, Andrew FaricY Mike Ricica, Josh' Miller and Cameron Cassidy, Wildcats posted four shutouts and allowed only twe goals. Whitby's first game was againet Vaughan who bad beaten Wildcats 3-1 in league play earlier in the season. I.ooking fer revenge and a quick start, Whitby scered twice in the firet period and did net allow their epponents toesetablish any Ind of attack in a 3-0 win. Justin Fox, who was chesen game star, led the way with twe goals with Kenny Henry adding the other. White and Niblett combined in goal for the shutout. Came two would be the turning point of the teurnament as Whitby faced a Wexford team which had net lest a game this seasen. .Wexford struck first, scoring wi*th 13 seconds left in the firet. However, David McIntyre would tie it midway through the second. Wexford weuld regain the lead late in the second and carry this advantage inte the third. Came star Henry turned the tide in Whitby's faveur, scoring twice in the third, firet fromn Fox and Miller, and the second unassisted with 1:13 left. With Wexford pressing in the lest minute, the defence rose te the occasion. Niblett and White again left the opposition shaking their heads. The final game of the round-robin would be against heet Pickering. With first place in their division on the lime Wildcatsskated te a 4-O win led by gaine star Foies two goals.
