Representing Canaa against nine other countries, Whitby took the gold in front of a most appreciative German crowd of about 2,000 people. The tournarnent began Jan. 2 with opening ceremonies, based on the Olympies. Players from each country paraded into the stadium and their national anthems were played. The gaines began with Whitby facing Sweden who had won the chamnpionship four of the last five years. Conditions at the stadium dictated the outcome of the gaine - ail gaines were- played at an open-air arena and for this gaine it was snowing. Whitby, however, did not let this slow thein down, but it was comical to watch players try to stickhandle with an inch of snow on the ice. Whitby carne out hitting and after the first few bodychecksý, the' Swedes started to back down. Steven Farquharson opened the scoring on a pass from Kyle Branch in the first period and with the snow coming down fairly steady, tis goal held up until the tlîird. Fear over threat toý artifacts By Mke Kowalsld Fears are being expressed about the potential threat to ancient nativie artifacts posed by the p roposed Lynde Shores hous- . Mgcevelopment. Two different organizations have written Ontario Culture Minister Anne Swarbrick in con- nection with the discovery -of artifacts, nearly 8 000 years old, in the vicinity ofý Lynde Creek Marsh. The groups - a local Indian band and a provincial heritage society - have called on Swar- brick to implement whatever measures are required te protect the artifacts from destruction. According to ministry officiaIs, however,. steps have already been taken te s3afeguard material ini the path of developinent or in proxùity to it. Inx recent mionths the Missis- saçsof Scugog [sand First Nation and The Society of Heri- tage Associates, an affiiate of the Ontario Historical Society, have both written the minister. The groups are fearful that arrowheads and pottery found near the marsh will be lost for- ever unless sufficient measures are in place to preserve the artifacts. «I have no knowledge of how signiflicant it (find) is,» said Alice Edgar, Mississaugas of Scugog Island adininistrator. "If's the whole idea of putting houses there,» she said.
