While Canada ie a great place to inveet it represents lees than three per cent of the total global capiÎaà zation. Holding assete in other parts of the world will proteet you from poor economic- conditions that may beisolated to particular market. During 1994, th Canadian stock market performed very poorly* and te Canadian dollar was very weak. Most other markets iri te world were-rather quiet this year also (as compared Wa'1993). Even éo, many fqoreign mutual funds will, show a significantly higher return than their Canadian counterparte (even the ones managed by thé sanie company). Over thé longterm, these fqoreign funde have historically averaged at least two per cent ta, three per cent greater returne than a comparable Canadian investmnent. There are many reasons, I will highlight three of them. FIrst, there are simply more companies from which ta, choose. Second, a mutual fund manager hias the authoriyt seek out high growth areas and avoid areas that are in recession. Third, the investments are held in foreign currencies,' therefore the falling Canadian dollar has increased the returne ta Canadian investors. It je actually possible ta have up to 36 per cent of your RRSP invested in fforeig-n -holdings. For examnple, let's say that you own two mutual funds in your RRSP: 80 per cent in a Canadian equity fund and 20 per cent i a foreign equity fund. The Canadian equity fund je al1lowed ta, have 20l per cent of ite assets in foreign while still being coneideréd 100 per cent Canadian. If that were the caseyo would have 36 per cent Of your RRSP invested in -foreigu h;ordýg. Investors muet be aware of what investments qualify as eligible foreign content. Penalties for ineligible assets and for exceeding the 20 per cent limit can be quite- severe - one per cent per month on the amount in excees of the limite With the rise of many new economies, the potential rewardsB are even greater. Be aware that many of the foeeign markets especially the new "emerging" markets, have greater rieke and may have wide swings* in ehare prices.
