INVERLYNN as it appeared in 1904 Whhby Archives photo Jnverlynni noted for Regency style, By the Whitby Liocal Architectural Conservation Advisory Commnitte. Inverlynn gained national prominence in 1972. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation filmed the 'Whiteoaksi of Jaîna' there: and used the hous as the family home in the television series. Located on the west side of Whitby on Giffard Street, it is situated on a large, well- treed lot. Inverlynn was built in 1860 for William Laing, a succeseful local merchant. He had the largeat mercantile and grain business in the county, in fact, the largest in several counties. Laing had been reeve in 1855 and member of the first Town council. in 1855 and 1856 prort becoimng mayor in 1863-64. He was also the major bnefactor- of St. Andrew's Preabyterian Church at St. John and Byron streets. When bis wife died, the bouse was sold to George McGillivray in 1870. McGillivray was a- noted Scottish gentleman who served on Town council for a year. Hie was also on the Whitby board of education for several.terms. McGillivray and b is wife Caroline Fothergill had 13 children. The most noted of thes was Florence Helena McGillivray (1864-1938), a famous Canadian painter.A number ofhler paintings bang in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. 0f the boysTheodore became a succeseful lawyer in Whiby,, Norman became a noted Preebyterianmiiter, and Charles a medical doctar in Whitby. The property is still owned by- their descendants today. The house was designed b y John Shier, provincial land surveyor and cler of the County of Ontario. Shier was also interested in agriculture and education. He was elected' president of the- South Ontario County Agrieu Itural Society and was- also a member oteBoard of School Trustees. Inýverlynn' itself is a. substantial brick résidence of 44 feet by 38 feetý with a wing extending northward 50 feet by 20 feet. It is a two-storey bouse wth a low-hi:pped roof. There are tall end chimneys on both aides and beautiful multi-paned windows. Inverlynn is a fine example of the later Regency Ontario vernacular b ouse. The Regency style originated in England during the period of 1811-1820. The Regent during this period was George, the Prince of Wales. He later became George IV. A centre door and large first floor windows with' small panes are typical of this style of home and give the hous a villa appearance. The only notable change ta, the exterior of Inverlynn occurred in 1922 when the original verandah was removed. It was replaced -witb a straight-roofed verandah with columns across th e front of the bouse. The Wihitby Chronlicle of- 1860 stated. that the bouse "possessed all the modemn improvements and conveniences suitable for the residence of a gentleman of wealth and means." Witby counicil bas designated Inverlynn as a histarical property under the Ontario Heritage Act atr consultation with LACAC. LACAC is a commite that advisoe Whitby council on heritage maUers. à 1995 INTER'IM TAX'NOTICE, The tirst inetalment of the interlm billlng for 1995 le due on: Februury 15, 1995 If you have flot received a tax bill and you are responeible for payment, please contact the Tax Depatment at 905-668-5803 to obtain the neceesary information.
