The public is invited to attend the opening '-ception for the exhibition on Sunday, May 14, 2 ta 4 p.m. The exhibition will be opened by gallery director Joan Murray of Whitby. The illustrated book, 'Tom Thompson: The Last Spring,' written by Murray, accompanies the exhibition. The book is available in the Gallery Gift Shop' and local bookstares. The exhibition comprises more than 20 oil sketches painted by Thomson in, the spring of 1917 in Algonquin Park. The sketches 0f Thomsons last spring on earth have a quiet resonance which, it is believed, serve ta deny any thought that lie committed suicide, one of the ideas wbich some had in 1917, th erof his death. Hu swork bas an optimism, an earnest desire ta grasp reality, which suggests that he wanted ta do more, as lie said in bis last letter ta bis father, and even that ho had corne ta, realize who ho was as an artist. Bon in the tawn 0f Claremont i Pickering Township, Thomson was the grandson of Scottish imnmigrants. Ho was the sixth of 10 clifdren 0f bis parents John and Margaret. The family moved to Rose IIIl farm near Leith, Il kilometres from Owen Sound. About 1906 in Toronto, Thomson began to seriously study art; by about 1908 he was working in Grip Iàmited, the same commercial art house as JXI.L MacDonald. There ho began to develop bis talent for painting. In the second decade of the century ho became friendly with Fred Varley, Arthur iAsmer, Lawren H[arris and'A.Y. Jackson. Later they went on ta, found the Group of Seven (in 1920). Thomson, a miqjor influence in Canadian art, was a forerunner of the Group. The Department of Canadian Herigag Museum Assistance Program gave financial support for the exhibition.
