A cavity ls caused by a chemical wreaction between food, enzymes and bacteria (present ln the mouth). The acid rwhich is formed from this reaction actually attacks the enamrel to create a hole ln the surface (cavity>. Cavities also form on the root surface and at the edge of olci fillings: If a smaii cavity is neglected it can progress into a painful infection. Silver amalgam and composite resin (white) are the most common f1111 ng materials used. Which material ls used depends on the location of the filling or patient preference. Fiiings can last for many years. The àaverage silver filling can last from 5-15 ears. Tooth coloured plastic fillings do not rast as long. Considering the amount of stress on 1our teeth everyday It Is not surprising that liii ngs do wear out. Cracks and leaks can form and decay recurs. It ls important 10 have your existing filings as well as your teeth checked regutarly to prevent extensive dental probiemrs. _____________ Thie Save the Lynde Marsh Committee'supportls- Durham Centre P.C.
