Photo by Peter Nilas, Whtby Free Press 'Sate Sohools' document tol be unveiled A new document, 'In Support of Safe Schools,' will be unveiled during ceremonies June 22, 10 a.m. at the Durhiam Board of Education Centre ini Whitby. The document was produced after the province last year ordered school boards tocollect data on violent incidents, and to form policies to promnote violence- free schools. Representatives from the four schools boards serving Durhamn Region -- Durliam's public anid separate school boards, North- umberland-Clarington public board and PeterboroughVictoria- Northiumberl an d- C Iarington separate board -- formed a Safe Schol steering committee. The document thieyproduced will be submitted to t e inistriy of Education 'and Tramning and later to school administrators for implementation in September thi year. MOGA preparations begin. A h April, 1995 - A te Durham-wide science fair, Ben Simons won gold, Jeremy Sumons silver and Steven Dorrepaal bronze in the junior pliysics category. Andrew Shiner won gold in the senior engineering category. "Postponing the Heat Deatli of the Universe" was performed with great success. The dlimbing wall was here. May, 1995 -- Sinclair was officially opened with a visit from the mayor, the lieutenant governor of Ontario, trustees and many other honoured guests. The draznatic part of the production was a huge success. The niudget boys' rugby team captures the LrOSSA c,-hampionship. A Sinclair first, Fiesta Day took place with a huge success. Many track athietes placed very well in DYSSA and travelled to Kingston tocomipete in OFSAA. June, 1995 -- The spring fling was a huge succees, selling so many tickets that they ran out at lunch hour and had to oeil them after school as well. Except for the fire alarrn going off because of the special effects, the dance was great. MOGA madness was a lot of fun with cartoons in TAG and a lot of fun in the courtyard. Yearbooks were great. I hope everyone bas had a lot of fun this year. I know I have. Look forward to September with enthusiasm knowing that youl be a year older and we get to do it ail over again. See you next year. At the annual spring convocation on June 10, Durham College celebrated'the graduation of 1,700 graduates and honoured 20 students with niedals for obtaining highest academic standing. Top student was Karen Cresanto, recipient of the Durhami College President's Gold Medal and the Governor General's Academic Medal. The lionour was awarded to the highest-ranldng graduate of any two- or three-year diploma program. Pour une derniere fois, salut. Saint-Oharles-Garnier finally had that special surprise activity we've been waiting for, and it was just great. We were able to buy a barbecue-grilled hotdog and a soft drink at a great price ($1.50), and we got to spend some time outside in the warm suri. More importantly, most'of the proceeda went to the Daniel Burton Bone -Marrow Fund in the hope that this *nine-year-old ANax boy wiil finally find a compatible I'd like ta thank the members of the 1994-95 student council for thefr undaunted efforts throughout the year, and would like ta wish the new 1995-1996 student council -- with Mélanie Girard as president -- the best of luck for next year. Since schoolls almost over, there are very few activities left ta report. However, there are stil people deserving of sorne credit, and this tume it isn't a student. On May 23 at the Durham sepaato scliool board lieadqarters, one of our top teacliers, M. Ghislain Lambert, received an award in recognition of lis varied contributions ta Catholic education. We cail the award ' Distinguished Educator of the Year,' and we unanimously proclaim that lie certainly deserves it. Congratulations, M. Lambert. We, I think we all ageethat this year bas been an exciting one. It bas been a fun-fiiled, friendsip-fiiled, and challenge- fiiled time whidh will certainly neyer be forgotten. Md also like ta wish ail the people leaving our sdliool, whether they be college-bound,, university- bound or daring enougli ta venture out inta the workforce, the very best of luck. While scliool may be nearly over, exains bave yet ta begin, so I hope everyone hangs in tliere one last tume before the long- awaited and well-deserved suminer break. Writing for tlie paper lias certainly been exciting, and Fd like ta thank my editar Mme Pauline Bédard for helping me, and for giving me such a great opportunity ta hone my reporting skills.
