Dear Mr. Harris: Them liberals writing ini the Toronto Star espe- cially are loving to fil you full up with advice. Like Common Sense Ain't That Common, and stuif like that. I thought I'd write to you with just to tell you that common sense just might work. For A Change. Whole bunches of those uppety lefty types have been telling anybody who'd listen that Common Sense tells us the world is flat. That the Sun travels around the Earth. 0f course, most of the time we have no reason te look up at the sky, so who cares? Let's talk about putting Common Sense te, work. First: about welfare. Sure, common sense says that people of welfare shouid do something for the money. Heck, sure some people cheat. So common sense says, let's get those cheats outta there. So there. For the others, 1 don't know quite how cutting welfÈre rates can do much. Well, sure, we save some tax money. But comînon sense a.Iso says those people gotta eat, gotta pay rent. Coinmon sense also says a lotta 'em have problems getting on in the world. Slum landiords aint going te love you a lot. Course, common sense also says that most people wiIl need help te get off welfare. Maybe even education. Training. And none of your boondoggle stuff, either. Real training for real jobs. Send 'em te Durhamn College. Eighty, ninety per cent of grads get jobs. Okay, 50 common sense says that's gorma cost a little more. So use your noggin. People elected you because you were talking sense. Now it's time te act that way. Even if it costs more money. About photo radar, 1 dunno. Some wise guys seem te think it just ain't fair: they got a right te speed, the police have te catch them fair and square. Sitting in a grey van at the side of the highway ain't the manly way te catch speeders, no gender slight intended. Me, I think common sense says the speed limit is the speed lixnit. If we was serious, we would permanently mount cameras on every highway across the province. Nail speeders and nail them good, every time. CÇommon sense ain't the samne as ruffled feathers, so don't you forget that, Mike. What else was you goin' on about? Oh, yeah. Trimming down the civil service. Nobody can argue with the intent. Goodness knows, over the past twenty five years we've *added services beyond good sense. Your trick will be te decide how toecut the useless and keep the usefiil. Neat trick. Hope you got pocketsful of common sense when you do this. Just remember, Mike: it has te work. And about this cutting of school administrators. Well, since I arn one, that's cutting pretty close te home. Stop snipping those shears 50 close te my tees. It does give me comfort when your new Minister of Education says he'll cut sehool adminstrators but won't cut* back on money for education. Hey, that's good stuff. What many of us would like are details. Like, Mike:- we went te teachers' collegre back in those longr INNUSHARE co-founder Joyce Marshall Marshall and Rhoda Gribben, another eýts help from Daniel Corner (left), Catie Innushare member, wiIl take when* they Chesson (second from ri ht) and Catie visit Davis Inlet, Labrador this month.
