Page 15 Lightning strikes twice Whitby Iàghtning played aggressively ta win the Durham Region under-lO girls' house league tournament ini Uxbridge Sunday. The victoiy completed a successful season for Lightning who had previously won the house league championship. The tournament final had Lighting playing againet a young but spirited Ajax United team. A confident and experienced Witby team was determined ta continue their string of victories that had brought them througli the earlier round-robin play undefeated. Whitby pressed hard and often during the flrst haif and were soon up by four goals thanka to Alexandria Ward-Bellinghbams three goals and one by Alicia Jujian. A flfth goal was added by Ward- Beflingham ini the second haif as Whitby went on ta win 5-1. Strong defensive performances were provided by Laura Elliott, Jennifer Lagani and Brittany Moffat. Ini earlier taurnament play, Lightning dominated their four games on goals by Ward- Bellingham (six), Julian (four), Heather Skeltan and Momica Forbes. Impressive defensive performances by Lindsay Hibbs, Laura Shea, Brooke Lee, Alexandra Shaw, Lindsay Parfitt and Ashley Bradimore allowed Whitby ta go through round-robin play without concecing a goal. After successive late-inning comeébacks against Clarington and Ajax, the heroica ended against a very strang Pickering Red Soi team. Ini the fret game of the day, Whitby fell bebind 6-1 ta, Clarington before the bats exploded for eight runsei the second inning for a three-run lead. Clarington, however, fought back with three of their own ta, even the contest at 9-9. But Whitby's version of the Terminatar, Paul Graham, shut the door tightly, allowing only one hit over three innings ta pick up the 104 victory i relief. Leading the attack for Optimiste were Josh Huether with a double and single and Matt Smith with two singles. Peter Triantafilou, ChMi James and Ryan Vopni each had a single. The decisive blow of the game came off the bat of Greg Zedic who hit a monstrous two-run shot over the 340-foot right-field wall. In game two Ajax quickly jumped in front 6-1. Once again, Graham entered the game ta, shut the door as he retired ail nine hitters he faced in a 7-6 victary. Scott Thompon scored Whitby's only i-un in a 3-1 loss. Solid pitching by Vopni and Graham, along with somne outstanding defensive plays at second base by Mike Feret, were not enough. Emmett a Choice third Anne Eminett of Wbhitby was third in the masters' women division of the Runners' Choice Toronto Half Marathon recently. Patricia Stevenson of London won with a tâme of one hour, 24.06 minutes; Glenda Morris ofLindsay second in 1:27.35. Emmett's time was 1:29.34. The Wbtitby Iroquois Soccer Club's Tormina Terriers followed up their undefeated Central Soccer League rep A championsbip with an equally impressive past-season playoff performance in the boys' under-15 division. Picked by mast as favourites in the playoffs, Terriers in fact raised their game ta a new level in gantes at North York's Esther Shiner Staclium fields. The team had earned a bye into the semi-finals as the first seeded team following the fi-st-place finish in the league. in the semi-final, the Whitby team, sponsored by Tormina Homes, kept possession away from a strong, defensive, Northwest Azzuri side that, next to the Terriers, had allowed the fewest goals this season. Whitby opened the scoring on a penalty kIck converted by Graham MacLean. only to have. Azzuri equalize against the run of play on a goal defiected off a defender's back. lIn the second haîf, Terriers passing and play off the ball broke down Azzuri's defence and MacLean notched hissecond of the game followed in rapid fashioni by Chris Camacho and Jim Roufos singles ta secure a 4-1 victory and a berth in the final. Opposition in the champianship game was provided by North Scarborough who were determined ta avenge previous cup and league lasses at the hande of Terriers. Although North Scarborough was a much fitter and mare physical side than they showed during the season, Wbitby elevated their game intoaa tremendaus display of passing, speed and finisbing. Led by league MVP MacLean, Terriers exploded for three early goals (MacLean, Camacho and John Gillingham) that left the North Scarborough team in tatters. The first period proved ta, be Whitby>s undoing as they feUl behind 3-1 and were under pressure throughout. The score could have been worse if not for the efforts of the defence made up of Bryan Poulin, Darren Forbes, Peter Triantafllou, Evan Cardweil, Jim Mitchell and Stacy Bremner. In the second period Maksteelers began ta pressure the Oshawa team. However a breakaway goal late in the period gave the visitars a -4-2 lead that held in the third period.
