The board's secondary teachers start at about $31,400 a year and work their way up to the top figure ini il years umder the grid system. But to get the suspended system restored, teachers had to, agree to managed health care benefits, staff reductions and six and a haif days of unpaid leave in the first year of the contract. The board will eventually see "significant savings" through the introduction of the managed health system, says board human resources superintendent John Brown. Changes to, current benefits will Include substituting name brand drugs with generic drugs in most cases, not paying for some new drugs' and limiting dental checkups to once every mine months instead of six, lie says. The board, will eliminate il teaching positions a year for the next five years, leading to an increase in class sizes. The major change will be to cap destreamed Grade 9 class sizes at 28 instead of 26 and increase the number of classes whieh can have up to three students above that number to 42 per cent from 40 per cent. "Mhe teachers have bouglit back three increments that they lost during the social contract," explains Brown, "and they will be returned in'96,'97 and'98." For example, lie says, à teacher hired in September, 1993 would have a salary increased from the $31,400 maintained during the socal contract to $33,482 ini 1996, recognizing one year of experien.ce. Many teachers 'wo't get the increase, th(ougl, Brown says, noting that 40 per cent have already reached the $53,000 maidmum. "But they're helping to pay for the Younger teachers to get their increment." The board is currently negotiating a new contract with English and French elementary and French secondary school teachers. The board hopes to reacli an agreement with them within a month.
