Exense account details ýsought An Oshawa public school board trustee lias won a partial victory i lier fight to obtain details of board supervisory officers' expense accounts. Kathleen Hopper wrote to Ontario education minister John Snobelen for help after a direct request to board director Pauline Laing for the expense account records was turmed down. Laing promised that staff would provide any information the board asks it for but refused to comment on Jlopper's request. Hopper first raised the issue ini June, wlien a committee of trustee was formed to croate draft procedures for administrative expenses. Those were brouglit forward for the board's consideration at Monday niglit!s standing comniittee meeting. The report was received for information but Laing promised to implement the guidelines,,which include limiting the cost of liotel rooms to $100 a night - aithougli more can be paid in certain ca ses - and cuitting meal allowances from, $53.50 a day to $40.' In her report, Laing said that wbule expenses have become a "highly publicized issue, staff must _not feel they run the risk of being chastised. when they follow the DeVille burgiar interruted Cleaners surprised e burglar The suspect, who pried open a breaking into a safe at DeVille steel door on the soutli side ofthie Produce early, Sunday morming. store to get in,, 15 describes. as a Police say the cleeners errived 'white man in his late twenties, sx et the 3570 Brock St. N. grocery feet and 190 pounds. store around 2:-50 a.m., entered tlirougli the basement and heard The culprit managed to break somebody hitting something with inte two small safes in the office - a sledge hammer. lie was attenipting to, crack a The banging stopped as they third, larger one when lie was went up the stairs and a man interrupted, flyrie says - and appeared at the top of the stairs. escaped with a- small emiount of "He ran back into the store and cash. fied out'the back -on foot," says' The store lias an alarm, lie adds, Staff Sergeent Sandy Ryrie. but it didn't activate. rules. "Morale is quiecly eroded wlien well-intenioned people following the rules are criticized, personally or generaliy," she concluded. Trustees were also presented witli a summary of expenses by the boerd's 91 supervisory officers, wbicli include Laing. They spent $3 1,500 on expenses between Jan. 1 and July 31,1995, the report shows, although that figure doesn't include registration for conferences, airline tickets,. liotel charges, etc. that were païd directly by the board and weren't calculated. The highest expenses on the summiary were mileage ($12,917), followed by hotel charges ($7,537), food ($7,166) and publications ($1,814). Hopper still wants to see the actual expenses incurred by each supervisory officer so that trustees cen make better financial decisions.
