By Mke Kowalgkl A long-awaited report on how to brinj more business to Whitby is nearmg completion. Mayor Tom Edwards said last week that the «marketing stra- tegy» plan should be ready for Tow*n council's perusalt'airly moon. Being prepared by the econo- mic developnient departmnent, the report will suggest ways the Town can attract commercial and industrial investment. "Therd's no deadline, but the information I have is that it's almost-there,» said Edwards. Although under the direction of Town staff much of the report will be baseA on input received fromn a citizens',committee which advises council on economic development. Formned three years ago, the committee's creation was a maLJor plank of Edwards' 1991 election campaign platform. 1Members of the voluntary com- mittee -- which reports to council through economic development dietor Peter Lebel -- where chosen after responding to a newspaper advertisement. "They haven't compieted their mandate yet, which is helping the Town develop a marketing strategy,» said Edwards. bSince the report was not ready by the end of the previous coun- cil's- terni in Novemnber, the com- mittee was asked to continue in the role, hie explained. Members of the advisory com- mittee are automobile dealer Anne Nurse, John Duffy and Lynn Woods, past-presfdent, of the Whitby Chaxnber of Com- merce. Theî committee was originally cornprsed of five people,, but former members Joseph Butson and David Robins were dis- missed by council last year after nublicly questià ning the commit- ]Robins and Butson told The Pree Press- the committee had not been allowed te do its job of advising council on how to attract business to Whitby. They claimed the group's role was never clearly dlefined and that its input was often limited.
