Town council approved a bylaw lowering the speed limit on streets within school zones to 40 kilometres per hour. Couacil also authorized spending $21,600 for signs which willl ho posted in front of al elementary schools in Whitby. Councils adoption of the bylaw effectively formalizes a decision of two weeks ago when it endorsed a motion from councillor Joe Drumm to reduce the speed limit to 40 from 50 ilometres per hour. Drurmn, who had been advocating such a measure for some time, told. council the reduction bas the overwhelming support of parents. "I wrote to every home and sehool association in Wbitby and reoeived a number of letters back," ho said. "A!l were sugesting it's the way to go."1 Although ho did 'not disagree with the decision, councillor Marcel Brunelle had reservations.
