Whitby Free Press, Wednesday, Lecember Z.1i, , rage Y colleg9e Of Teachers:e Another layer of bureaucracy To the editors Margaret Wilson, chair of the comnittee creating the proposed College of Teachers, gave the citizens and teachers of Durham Region a frightening indication of how ail teachers will be deait with by the Conservative governmnent iniOntario. She was invited to give a presentation on the proposed College of Teachers at the Durham Education Centre on Nov. 21. Her agenda was apparent very early in lier presentation: to teil teachers what is good for their profession whether they like it or not, to cleverly avoid penetrating questions like ministry babble, name-dropping and the odd snide remark, and to treat concerned professionals like naughty children. It is difficuit ta reconcile the euphemistic titie of thé College of Teachers documentation, 'The Privilege of Professionalism,' with the plain truth that Mr. Snobelen and the Ontario Ministry of Education are trying ta shove this latest bureaucratic burden down teachers throats. (Keep in mind that this push is coming from the sanemi ruslter who only weeks into bis elected mandate was caught red-handed trying to create a false crisis 'in education in Ontario. Need I say more?) Why do we need another layer of bureaucracy in this province to do the Work that i8 already being done by our school administrators, boards of education and professional organizations? The Conservative government lias strongly advocated democratic principles in the workplace: an admirable concept. Teachers across Ontario have already or will veiy shortly vote ta accept orreject the proposed College of Teachers. Will the reuits of these votes ha considered and respected by . the governinent? They certainly should ha, if the government truly supporté workplaoe damocracy. The manner in which thesa rasults are treatad by the Ministry of Education will provide valuable insight into this goverrnment's attitude towards aducated profassionals. .Hopefully, this attitude will differ from the contempt shown by Msé.
