Whitby Free Pres. Wednesday, January 4, 1996 , Page 9 Celebrating 30 years of service m Whitby On October 13th, 1915, Henry "Hy" Geisenbier, founder of the Herculaneaum Dance Club of St. Louis, Missouri, brought the Federation of Dance Clubs together to form the Young Men's Progressive Civic Association with 32 members. Within five months the organization grew to a membership of 750. The name of the organization changed to Junior Citizens - commonly referred to as JC s. In 1918, the Junior Citizens became affiliated with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce and officially became the St. Louis Junior Chamber of Commerce. Twenty nine young businessmen s groups throughout the U.S.A. formed the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce with Henry "Hy" Geisenbier being elected the first President on January 2 1st, 1920. The Junior Chamber movement came to Canada in 1923 with the formation of its first chapter; The Young Men's Section of the Winnipeg Board of Trade. As it was in St. Louis, the Junior Chamber movement involved organizing to meet the needs of young people and in turn the needs of the community. On February 2nd, 1936, representatives from chapters across Canada met in Toronto and drew up a constitution and officially founded what was called the Canadian Junior Chamber of Commerce with Hugh B. Holland being elected the first President. The Canadian Junior Chamber has contributed greatly to Canada. and to the many communities within which we operate. A few of our accomplishments are listed below. We were promoters of a 'nique Canadian Flag in the early sixties, made several presentations to the Federal Goverment, prior to the great Flag Debate. In the fifties, we suggested that Dominion Day be called Canada Day. ýIn 1961, Junior Achievement became a National Program. We helped give them a start. Perhaps the most significant of our achievements began at the 1 51 World Congress in Montreal. The Congress Instantaneous Translation services worked so well that the Arnprior Jaycees built equipment to be used at our National Conventions. National President Ross Smyth presented the idea of instantaneous translation to the Speaker of the House, Rene Beaudouin, and it has been part of the House of Commons since 1958. The Whitby Jun ior Chamber/Jaycees is a member of the Canadian Junior Chamber (CJC) which is a National organization with 46 chapters in communities from coast to coast and Junior Chamber International (JCI). Junior Chamber International consists of over 350,000 members in 108 countries around the world. In 1966, Dennis Stevens with a handful of young men started the Whitby Junior Chamber/Jaycees. Since then, the organization has made many contributions to the community along with giving many young men and women the opportunity to develop their full leadership potential. The Whitby Jaycees have been involved in such programs as Santa Claus Parade, Canada Day Parade, County Town Carnival, Haunted Houses, Lock it and Pocket the Key, Peter Pride and Municipal, Provincial and Federal Election Forums. This year, the Whitby Jaycees are celebrating their 30th anniversary. Throughout the coming year, the Jaycees will be very visible in the community starting with Jaycee Week beginning January 21 st. There will be orientation/intro nights and Breakfasts with major business and political leaders. On the 25th of January, the Whitby Jaycees will be holding its first annual Emergency Services Awards.
