The practice of holding- "Scout-Guide Weeks" in Canada goes back to the 1940a when *Scouts and Guides co- operated in "Boy Scout-Girl Guide" weeks. The week centres around Feb. 22, designated this year by Whitby council as "Scout-Guide Day" ln Whitby. Feb. 22 is the anniversary of the birth of the Scouts' and Guides' founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell. It was also the birthday of Baden-Powell's wife, Lady Olave Baden-Powell, who became Chef Guide of the World. The Guides celebrate 'mmnking Day" on Feb. 22 when they think about their fellow Guides from around the world.' Preparing for Kub Kar races offers an opportunity for Cubs to work together with a parent or other adult in the design and construction of their cars. Their efforts are rewarded by "adult-youth design" prizes. There is also a prize for Cubs who make their car entirely on their own - a "vouth-only design" category. According to Larry Webb, assistant district commissioner for Cubs in the Whitby district, the Cubs need a lot of encouragement by their leaders to get maximum effort. The leaders also compete with their'own cars for best speed and design. A team of district volunteers has been, out almost every weelcday evening for the last three weeks of pack run-offe, concluding tomorrow (Thursday) niglit.
