Keep door shut on 'moral terrorists' To the. editors After the Durham Board hac successfully expunged Reduce the Risk, a blatantîy pro-homosexual AIDS9 document, from the school Teachers: speill1oç To theoeditors The two-week March break is here for 62,000 studonts of the Durham Board of Education. During a normal school year the break is one week, but with the constraints of the social contract, teachers have been forced to tae extra days off without pay. Tis year ail Durham board teachers are taking four unpaid days. This losa of salary, plus the fr-eezing of increments for lesm experienced teachers, ha. removed over -$11 million from the local economy and local businesses. Besides the loss of revenue for local business there is also a loss of four professional development day.. Theso days are used by teachers to prepare programs, evaluato student progress and improve our teaching skills. The public sector gave up $2 billion in salary ovor the last three years but we are told that the deficit continued to riso. Where did our $2 billion go? Teachers cars deoply for the students we teach, but constant government cuts are making it verY difficult to maintain the quality of educational service which teachers, parents and 1 system, one would think that trustees would now spend their time and energy findtng appropriatie sex oducation to meot communtty standards. However, as the old adage goes, "One apple can spoil the whole bunch." Any parent unlucky enough te 'have wltnossed truste. Fatrburn's recent address te the Durham board's fanitly 1f. education advisory committee would b. appalled. Not only did ho encourage committee members te withstand the board's decisto-n te throw out Reduce the Risk but he inctted them te agitate and possibly fragment the trustees,' position. "Dont let tht, die," he instructed."Keep it alive. There are other avenues of protest." It i. unthinkable that a trustee could agitate in tht. manner. Whatever happened to "trustees working together as a team" - rhetoric? Team spirit was conspicuous by its abseno, and bege the question, What !a in it for this 'team' player? What t. the personal agenda? Fairburn, in my opinion, wants to continue marketing tht. anything-goes;-wear..a.cond0m a- genda to the kids, with impunity. So far, as parents in Durham Region have been fortunate enough to slam the door shut on these "Moral terroriste." Toronto parents weren't 50 lucky. Their AIDS document turned Into sexual orientation: homosexu- altty/lesbianiB, and homophobia right before their oyes. If we don't instst on abstinence- based sex education, our chtldren, too, nxay becomo "condom fodder" for gay propaganda, seduced into a lifestyle that will prexnaturely kil themn. And what do the nine or 10 children at Gardenwood Estates receive in tnrn? Those children live directly across the street from Leslie MeFarlano Public School and currently enjoy a 60-second walk to school. They are within the new' Broughton school boundaries. It was suggested at a board meeting that they allow these children to stay 'at McFarlane for the two years of construction of the Garden Street underpass. Psrhaps this i. only a 'bandaid solution. Once construction of the underpass is complote, the children will transfer to Broughton. They will have to walk along Garden Street (whore there no sidewalks or guardrails) to Martinet Street. [s the Durham Board of Education then going to provide busing for these children? It i. written in their transportation policy that "Students may be entitled to transportation services for reasons of safety (ie. no sidewalks) ... i'aher than distance." Or perhaps the Durham board will urge those parents to, lobbv for sidewalkS and guardrails. I amn appalled and deeply saddened by what lengths the board will go ta ensure that enrolment numbers are high enough.
