The early resuits of a Town council surey of' local rate- payers' opinions on three key recommendations put forward byr the GTA Task Force were released Monday. Free Press. McKay said 592 respondents were in favour of Whitby con- tinuing as a separate municipa- lity within its current boundaries while only 24 were opposed. Oný the issue of assisting other municipalities through the pool- ing of Wihitby's industrial and commercial assessment/taxes for education Purposes, 598 were opposed,, efght were in favour and 12 had no opinion. As for -Whitby being part of a new larger regional structure known as the Greater Toronto Council, but with limited indirect representation, 601 people said no, eight said yes and nine had no opinion. Residents have until April 12 to drop off thefr completed ques- Tonies at varjous municipal facilities. Resuits of the survey will be presented to the Ontario govern- ment local MPPs and a special panef appointed by the province to review the GA Taik Force repot haired by Dr. Anne Golden, the task foroe made 51 recom- mendations for reforming the GTA. T'he report is now before the government, but there has been no indication of how many, if any, of the recommendations will be implemented.
