The machine, seven and a haif metres long (25 feet), is supported by a floating pontoon at each end. The pontoons support a floating helical roller, a bit like a large coïkscrew. The helical roUler is rotated ini the water by a small electric motor and a very efficient wave train is generated. The floating wave generator lias a. wide range of potential applications. One is for the control Technology is simple d efficient of ice formation in harbours'and marinas., Bymatann a constant wave action and mnixing some lower,, warmer water with the colder, surface water, ice wiil not form. In addition the outward moving wave train wiil carry any broken ice and debris away from the machine. Other uses for the m achine are to aid in aerating stagnant lakes, ponds and lagoons and to help control the build-up of algae. 1 The generator was invented by Per Andersen, a Canadian marine engineer who holda patents for the technology ini both Canada and the U.S. Golder Associ ates in Whitby lias an agreement with Andersen te develop and market the technology worldwide. A.ccording te Michael Maher, manager of Golder's Whitby office, the technology is very simple and efficient. 'Because the helical roiler floats, very ittle energy is needed te rotate it and produce. the wave. Our prototype is driven by a very small 1/8 horsepower DC motor powered by a small portable generator. "We are planning te' attacli a smal solar panel and battery pack to allow the machine te run wave generater is to, prevent ice build-up at the- Ward's Island berth for the Toronto Island Ferry. The ferry service, which runs year round, is3 frequently inconvemnieed by ice related problems during docldng.* Because of the long range of the generated wave train, close to 100 metres for the prototype, it will aiso be useful for the control of ice In marinas .wbich can cause damage te docks and other facilities. It is planned te have, the Production models of the wave generator built in Durham Region. It could be used to prevent !ce buitci-uo in such locations as1 marinas or ferru dockings. independent of an external power source," says Maher.' It was. calculated that the prototype would generate a wave with -a heiglit of 100 millimetres (four inches). The tests recently completed in Oshawit harbour conflrmned that the wave heiglt is botter than expected, gloser te 150 illimetres (six inches3). Larger models, can be built which can produce. wave heiglits up to 300 millimetres (one foot). Further trials of the, wave generator are planned for the summer, particularly with respect to demaonatrating its effectiveness in increasing dissolved oxygen levels in stagnant water.
