Should those two additional developments - onie on the west side and the other east - proceed, it would likely mean the village would prow much larger and m3zch faster. Brooklinites have always prided themselveB on the congemial,. rural feeling of the village. The smal size of the village is an important factor in this. Brooklin is people- sized - you can easiiy walk or ride a bike from one side ta the other. Brooklin is aiready what developers ail over North America are trying ta, build - they cail it % neo-traditional.' rm not sure 'neo- Brooklin' can be built, after al commu.nities3 are made up of people not buildings. And buildings can be thrown up much faster than people can come together and become a community., That is why it is so important for Brooli's population ta, grow siowly. A commulnity is a precious and delicate thing. It takes time and effort to integrate new people - on everyone's part, new and aid alike. And at a projected 500 ta 600 new residents each and eveiy ý3rooklin 1t year, this will be a challenge. But even this. rate of growth is probabiy not in the best and short- term interests of the two developers. And they may, appeal the committee's decision ta stick ta the original plan of 10,000 by' 2011. It wauld seem a tad undemnocratie 'if a Town or a community cannot contrai itsaown rate ofgrowth. But stranger things have happened ini the world of municipal politics. However, ini this instance, any battie wiil have the developers currently building homes ini Brooklin fighting alongoide the Town.
