Page 14, Whltby Free Prose, Wednesday, June 19, 1996 Answers sou'ght in wrong places To the edltor: -Re: Lncreased truck fines and demerit Points against truck drivers. Your employer bas just called you into the office and inforrns you that because of competition in whatover business you are In, he le forced to cut your wages to what they were 10 years ago (tough break). The cost of your heating oil, hydro, phone bill, water, groceries, dlothing for your children, vehicle and repair coat, property taxes, maintenance on your house, haveail skyrocketed. Then cornes the unexpected - like the lawnmower conks out or the washer or dryer stops working, and you find that you just can't, make that monthly mortgage payment. Eventually the Minister of FInanoe or the Minister of Housing stepei and says this simply ls not acceptable. Triple the mortgage payments, increase the late payment charges, maise the interest rates. Do these sound like sensible solutions toyour problemi? We do not expeet the genersi public te be aware or understand the realities of the trucking industry, so we are tiying te put it in a way that you might understand. Yes, we are hauling frelght for lees money than we were 10 years ago. Yes, the government did collect $2.45 billion in fuel tax, in the fiscal year 94/95, 90 per cent of which was paid by trucks, yet only $900 million was reinvested on our deteriorating highways.Less revenue a.nd the fact that trucks are crashing and pounding their way down these highways are two of the biggest factors involving unsafe trucks. Mr. Palladini, before you maise the fines, you. have te put the owners of large trucks back on a level playing field. Sucking even more money out of the industry will not solve the problern, i fact, it will escalate it. To the families of Worona and Tyrreil, we. beg you, please continue your crusade for saler trucks and saler highways. You actions are justified, but for the sake of ail future victims such as Angéla and James, make a sharp left turn. You are looking for answers ln ail the wrong places. The solutions lay in, the deregulation of the trucking industry, fr-ee trade, road conditions and driver education and licencing, ail of which are the responsibility of the goverrnent not the truckirig industry. Maybe if we had a trueldng association in this province with the knowhow or the -backbone, these problens would have been solved long ago or rnaybe would have neyer eisted at ail, but for smre itfs too late. Re: Letter, Truck driving facto disterted,' Free Press, May 22 I would like to publicly thank Bian M. Little for writing a wonderful and rnost truthful letter ln defenoe o! the trucking industry. For decades this industry has been narned-called, picked-on and bas had no respect from the public. This bas rea]ly got te change. Mir. Little's issues were spot on. .Most of the truckers on the highways are human beings with families at home and safety is a number one issue. By the way, the industry bas not bad a maise in over 10 years. Lets see the general public put up with those conditions. So let'. please try and made the trucking industry carry a better reputation. I believe the Mistry of Transport could help in this matter. Sharon Reid Ajax 25%011!
