When it originally opened in October 1919, the hospital ushered in a new era of psychiatrie care. The progressive design, incorporating 16 cottages, took full advantage of the hospitalle lake- shore location. Patients who had formally been housed in dark facilities had acoess to fresh air and sunshine in an environment that was conducive to healing. With the design of the new hospital, the Whitby centre remains at the forefront of psychiatrie care in the world.
