I confess the meeting was not confrontational and they appeared to be workcing together for the good of education. _ I explained that this week there will be reports from the Cromble Panel which wilI probably suggest that this governinent implement the Sweeney Report. This report suggeste<i few school boards. Perbaps it will also suggest that the province fund ail of education. For the average person, understandlng our sehool boards budgets is very confusing. The Sweeney Report suggested that over 45 per cent of education funding le spent outside the classroom. This has been challenged and no one would argue that everything from cutting the grass, cleaning the halls, school'buses to developing curriculum does affect'the classroomn. I try to simpliiy these large budgets by starting with the classroom. For example, if there are 25 students ln a clase with average spending of $5,000 per student, this amounts to $125,000 per clase. In this example, we-pay a teacher approimately $50,000, perhaps $ 10,000 for cleaning and maintenance, $1,000 per student ($25,000) for busing, $1,000 per student ($25,000) for supplies and that leaves $15,000 for incidentais or contracting services. If a school ba s 500 students, at $5,000 per student, that ie a echool budget of $2.5 million. The problem becomes complicated when you start at the top with a school board budget of over $100 million. Often there doas not seem to be enough left for the classroom. I have used conservative estimates as some boards spand as much *8,000 or *9,000 per secondary student. I support that every student deserves a fair acoess to an education and I believe that the money should go with the student. I amn a strong supporter of our parent councils workIng with the principals and teachers to, allocate their resources ln the classroom. Education le al about students and schools are- an integral- part of every communuty. Teachers, parents, commumity partners and students* are at the heart of these discussion. Teachers must be supported and flot become the victims in these discussions.
