Wednesclav. Novnmh~r Qfl i Slioe Why the Whitby Santa Claus de parade beats Toronto's. Honest! ng Now 1 know that already some of you are scofflng, already yci nd are preparing to check the classifieds. But bear with me as 1 mak( my case, based on the cold, hard experience of the Toronti ar parade. he Flrst, there is the difference ln timing. For Whltby, ail you neec ic. do is arrive more or iepss around the Urne It begins. My favouritE ai spot is on Brock Street- ight near that Insurance agency thai CY hands out the free hot chocolate. So the total time invested fror at. bunding up the kddiig parking and walking to your spot is approximateîy 20 to30mnts tops. in Compare that to the Toronto experience. It requires as muci le planning as the annuai famiiy holiday, except it's a lot colder. The r, night before ail is laid out -- ciothing, scarves, thermoses, e comforters. You leave at 10 a.m. to catch the il a.m. GO train, which of course is ln Pickering. You are fortunate, you get a parking spot in the lot and purchase your tickets before the train arrives. As the train leaves, you see a mob of parents and chiidren jumping up and down with frustration at the ticket office that is staffed with one hapless agent. Those people are now doomed fo wait an additionai hour for the next train and may as weli watch the parade from the top of the CN Tower, since ail the good spots wili be long gone. You meet your friends at the train and by 12:30 you are perched curbside at King and Yonge fighting for your territory like a wounded iioness whiie trying to keep smail chiidren entertained for two more hours until the parade actuaiiy arrives. Vour spousai unit, of course, is not with you, hes at church until noon and 50 drives like a bat out of ...., weli he drives fast, to get to the parade. F:inds a spot at his dads apaniment building after circling the side streets for 20 minutes, hops the subway and then gets to play the new game. This game is similar to a needie in a haystack, its called'Find the famiiy in the crowd.' Total time invested, four and a haif hours, before your first clown. Lets now examine the parade itself. When Whitby's begins, the people you came with are the ones you sit with. In Toronto you discover children draped ail over you that you had neyer met. Their parents, having slept in and gone to brunch instead of staking out their spot, have sent the kids to the front. The crowding is such that you dont actually see the float until it is just in front 0f you and only then if the kid beside you doesn't decide ta stand up for a better look. This doesnt include the parade waikers, those lost souls with no spot of their own who wander up and down the street in front of the crowd hoping for a gap in the masses. ln Whitbys, on the other hand, theres lots of space to see the floats and the clowns. i admit that for the Toronto spectacle, 1 realiy enjoyed shaking the hands of the Olympic athietes and seeing a real silver medal, and the dragon float was terrific. But Whitby has something that the Toronto parade can't touch. 1 refer, of course, to the semi-trailer ioads of Beavers. Yes, a Santa Claus parade isn't a parade to me unless 1 see those Beavers in their littie hats or in costume, waving like mad." Then theres another feature about Whitbys I like. 1 know a lot of the people in our parade. 1 wave to friends, acquaintances, familiar faces. T 'he floats aren't elaborate, but they're sincere. But i have to confess that the girls loved the Toronto parade, had a wonderful time and are already talking about next year. We enjoyed the day, but you'l' stili find us sipping hot chocolate and waving like mad at those Beavers in the Whitby parade. But there is one thing about both parades. Why do ail the bands stop playing when they get ta the corner l'm standing on? dai tzo a 1 Research ou .0 d te at m is a I OP3.33TH P BdryR.,Uc 2 427-216 Frustration over response FJOM PAGE 1 gaup ta which Billingsley's daughter belongs. -rt' ta the p oint now where we're realgr getting frustrated and angry because of. thea refusais turndowns and insults thai we're getting» saLysThm)np- son, although ho admits they may simplY be going abodut it ail wrong.
